Steering wheel removal / replacement
 

I've just had my re-trimmed steering wheel delivered from Robin. Looks great :)

Question 1 - Is it a very easy job to swap them over (for "easy" read "within the capabilities of someone who can just about change a plug") ?
Question 2 - If the answer to Q1 above is "Yes" can anyone point me to a "Idiots guide to changing an S2000 steering wheel". ? I guess a YouToob video will do.

My concern is more about disrupting the airbag than anything else.

It's a pre-facelift if that makes any difference.

It's easy.

One thing, make sure you have your radio code handy as you need to disconnect the battery to remove the airbag. Also, you'll more than likely have to swing by a dealer to have the SRS light reset after reconnecting the airbag. Local dealer didn't charge me to reset it when I changed my steering wheel.

And don't fully remove the middle bolt when removing the wheel. It will act like a stopper when you yank the wheel and avoid you smashing yourself in the face!

I'm assuming these instructions apply except the cruise control bit (we don't have them over this side of the pond).

Is a steering wheel "puller" necessary as I don't have one of these. will it move just by brute force ?

I used a puller, they're pretty cheap over here. Based on yours being an older car I'd say get the puller, it will probably be difficult without it.

Just leave the nut on the first few threads and give it a few whacks around the wheel to get it off. Or, leave the nut totally off and see if you can avoid a steering wheel shaped dent in your nose!

Hi one important thing about pre removal of steering of course is battery removal. Radio code is of course important and also to remove the negative terminal first and then of course positive one. Then (as per workshop manual) to wait three minutes before any disconnections.

I have swapped about 50 or so wheels and never needed a puller for any of them:

disconnect the battery
remove plastic covers from the side of the steering wheel, one cover is bigger than the other

remove the 2 torxs fittings

pull airbag away and disconnect

mark the centre point of the wheel so that when you put the new wheel on you’ll know the steering is in the centre

undo the steering wheel bolt and don’t remove

hold the wheel with both hands at the 3 and 9 o clock positions

Pull and push the wheel forwards and backwards towards the front of the car and to the rear of the car with both hands in opposite directions

the wheel will loosen up away from the splines

Remove bolt and wheel

Wheel came off very easily with a few wiggles.

And new one looks great :thumbup:
