Test Drive - My new car
Not had much chance to post this week what with work but been out for a test drive at a Toyota dealers (in Hungary) and I think I've found my future car
Trabant 601
Performance:
0-62mph - never. Only someone who was clinically insane would take this car above 5mph.
Top speed - Dunno I daren't take the thing above 5mph at a guess. To be honest I never looked at the speedo as I was concentrating too much on not killing myself by driving into a blade of grass
Engine power - 29hp of fury
Safety:
This car will never leave you maimed after a crash..............because you'll be dead. The combination of papier mache body shell, brakes more akin to the ones Fred Flinstone uses a fuel tank made out of mild steel and coated only in black paint mounted right above the engine means that at least the family won't have to pay for your cremation if you have a front end collision
Ergonomics:
Well the pedals seem mounted about 45 degrees across the cabin to where you're sitting and the Gear box is..............shall we say interesting. A column mounted stick thats position seems to have no particular relevance to which gear you're in. My method was generally to put it in gear find the biting point and see which direction you moved in. If you went in the wrong direction you waggled the stick about for a minute of two and tried again, if you went in the right direction never move it until you want to stop and go in the other direction.
Reliability:
The only Guarantee on this car is that it WILL break down. Thankfully you can just put a match to the body and the whol thing will disappear without a trace
Security:
They seem to have taken an interestingly novel approach to security. The optional Wasps nest mounted in the boot meant that there was a semi present cloud of the stinging beasties to chase off the unwanted attentions of any interested Chavs
End result, I WANT ONE

I had a go in one of those when inter-railing in my teens through Germany!
My memory of it was with every gear change I used to engage the horn cos its on a stalk on the left that I could'nt avoid catching with my knee. Small car, great driving position
