Time to Store or Sell?

Haven't used to forum too much but a quick little recap.

I'm now in my 5th year of ownership of my 2005 S2000 GT. Have been working abroad for almost a decade and came home to the UK buy it then brought it back over here (Spain & Gibraltar) and swapped the plates over (thank god for flat beam headlights).

Anywhoo ive been using it as a daily driver since, 20 miles a day to and from work and if i go to my girlfriends in Marbella it's a 60 mile round trip, it's always flew through MOT's, the only issues ive had during my time with it was a replacement cat (went aftermarket after seeing the OEM price), a rear shock went a couple of years ago so both were replaced and i swapped over the TCT to a Ballade Sports one toward the end of last year when it started ticking. So happy motoring over all.

But i am starting to getting the itch, a focus rs itch or just something i can at least stretch my 6ft 3 frame out in as the lack of space does take it's toll, especially as most of my miles are motorway ones and 4k revs just to do the national speed limit also gets tiresome as well as noisy.

I've been watching prices rise slightly over the last year or so, mines FSH, 105k miles and completely standard. RHD cars arent worth so much out here but then a car like the S2000 is because of the obvious weather benefits, and those gibbos sure love their Hondas. Would cost me around £600 to send home to the UK on a trailer, plus flights and then faffing around re-registering it. So i'm left wondering what to do, sell it, send it home for someone to enjoy, or perhaps put it away and have some of the niggles done like my rocker cover re-painted and some tiny touch ups and sit on it as an investment.

I realise its an each to their own, just looking for some opnions or how they see the market.

TIA

I would flog it there if you can?

At 105k I doubt it'll appreciate to the point it's worth storing

Reckon only the low/super low milers have got any legs in them?

Yes, probably (I hope so at 18k miles here:))

I'm pretty sure they are worth more on the continent than they are here, though.

miloking 03-07-2018 07:58 AM

how much you want for it? I would keep it tho...i kept my s2000 stored back home and bought second one while i work in europe. Kind of the opposite of your problem...

Nottm_S2 03-07-2018 10:19 AM

I reckon you'd miss it. What's it worth over there? Is it c£8k here? I don't really know but it looks tidy

Could you put it away for a few months, drive the new thing and decide?

davers 03-07-2018 11:14 PM

Well im looking around the 8 mark, someone offered me 7 not too long ago that i considered but he was a tyre kicker.

@Nottm_S2 Yeah there's probably some truth in that, between May and October it pretty much doesn't rain, and some of the Spanish roads and mountain ones are unbelievable, there a literally dozens on my doorstep that would trounce some of the ones you see on Grand Tour/Top Gear. The car has 18months left on its MOT so yeah guess i could have both for a while and see.

Id been interested if the car was in the uk

No idea, I'm afraid, maybe ask in "Site Info" or check your Paypal/bank account.

davers 03-08-2018 11:44 PM

@Lovegroova when/if the time comes ill make sure any rules are followed if i offer it for sale here.

I think for now im going to enjoy what could be my last spanish summer with the car and then make a decision from there.

whats with the flat beam info, I am about to take my s2000 to Italy for a few years, I seem to remember when i bought it in 2002, that didn't need to do anything about headlight deflectors while in Europe but cant remember the details.

Not sure if it applies to both variants of S2K, but mines a 2005 so an AP2 in all but engine, think they're called HID lights and self leveling. Basically the lights don't point slightly toward the left, so there are no need for beam deflectors or any adjustment to the lights, there was a official release from Honda to confirm this but i cant find it now.

I've never been flashed by oncoming cars the entire time i've lived here, and its passed the very strict MOT/ITV every time without fail, and with "guiri coches" they will fail them for any little thing, but the lights are perfect. One thing though, because we only have one fog and one reverse light, guess what, they need to be on opposite sides, its the case for Spain, not sure about Italy, however nothing has ever been mentioned to me, gods honest truth they've never even put the fogs on during the test, mine are still standard!

Same Question, Different Circumstances

I have a my06 with 48k careful miles that I have owned from new which I love.It has never been driven in the winter so it has never had any salt on it, because of this when I had the geo bolts greased 3 years ago they were all free. I have had several mods which imo have improved how the car drives, e.g. Mugen manifold, Hondata remap, etc. I had the car in VTEC once last year to try out the remap.
My problem is that neither Madam Santenay and I want to sell the car but this year we will be lucky if we do 1000 miles in it, last year we did under 3k and those were mainly in the South of France. The question is do I keep it covered up in the garage or very reluctantly sell it?

unclefester 03-18-2018 05:57 AM

If you sell a good one, you will not find another one as good to replace it with that you know and trust the history of. So unless you need to sell ... i would keep it.

Thanks Unclefester, I know you are right. I don't need to sell it for the money but I don't want to see Madam Santenay having to sell it as it would be difficult for her.

Soggybottomboy 03-18-2018 07:07 AM

Keep it.

Nottm_S2 03-18-2018 08:26 AM

They aren't hard to sell, especially a cared for example like yours sounds.

Keep it until that mileage is 0..

My heart and Madam Santenay say keep it and there is a possibility we could use the car towards the second half of the year. My head says to save Madam Wendy being stuck with it and selling it to a dealer for next to nothing I should sell it to someone who would look after the car.
Thank you for all input, I will take your advice and keep it a bit longer.

Good call. SORN'd here until the summer comes :)

I live in a picturesque island with a climate which permits me to drive it roof-down for most of the year and I want to sell it.

I have a depreciation-free, carefully-used classic car for high days and holidays and I want to sell it.

What you gonna do - invest in a new Kia Stinger and watch it fall out of bed over a couple of years?

I believe you may both be suffering from SAD. Get the roofs down & get some sunlight - that was rather bracing, yesterday...

I understand what you are saying. I don't want to sell it, it's because I am unable to drive it as much as I would like to and Madam Santenay having to sell it which would be a major problem for her. I would not be looking to replace the car, there is nothing to replace it with unless I won the lottery. Yes I am suffering from SAD, nothing that a month in the South of France wouldn't cure.

Quick - while your EU passport is still valid!

Hopefully September if I can get insurance.
I have got a couple of books with motorcycle rides so I am planning a few of those plus the Clun Run and the Mary Ann Evans day, so things to look forward too, just need the sun.

Nick Graves 03-20-2018 10:47 AM

I feel a bit sun- (or wind-?) burned after the last couple of days!

unclefester 03-20-2018 10:40 PM

Don't worry, with the new quarterly tax stuff, it won't be something you'll get used to :D

Nick Graves 03-21-2018 12:45 PM

I shall probably change career before Making Tax Diabolical happens.
