Default Trickle charger - disconnect battery?

My battery has gone flat whilst the car's been sat in the garage. I've just connected a trickle charger to the terminals and all appears to be charging now. Should I disconnect the car and just charge the battery or is it safe/ok just to clip on the top?

What sort of trickle charger are you using?

If it doesn't switch off automatically the battery might get very warm....

It's a long term seasonal charger but just wasn't sure if I should up clip the car terminals on the battery first. Seems ok though.

I have used a Halfords Maintenance trickle charger (model 1889460) for a number of years. I always leave battery connected and the charger is often left on for two months at a time, no problems.
It will switch on and off automatically and maintain the condition of your battery.

I have the Lidl clone of the Ctek, auto switching, leave it on as long as you like.

Agreed, a trickle charger by definition should be capable of delivering a trickle charge
