Default The Uk's Great Drives

Due to having to use holidays in order to get my S2000 fixed, I've not got enough holdiay for a decent break.

So I've decided that I'm going to take a few long weekends around the country.

Getting to the point, I'm really interested in any great driving roads people can recommend. I'd love to take in as many as I can in the S2000.

I used to know the Lake District quite well from my biking days, but I'm interested in going anywhere.

So what great drives do you know? (And are willing to share!)

-Brian.

Maybe a bit far for you southerners but my favourite stretch of road by far is the 60 miles between Inverness and Ullapool (not too far from John O'Groats).
It is a combination of very long straights, tight twisty sections, sweeping bends, miles of S bends, steep hill climbs, flat moorlands, steep descents. The road is smooth as glass, no pot holes anywhere but best of all, for the middle 40 mile section there are no cops

Oh, and there is also some scenery if you are into that kind of thing.

Not too many. Scariest moment is when you hit Corrieshalloch Gorge which drops about 600ft very rapidly. Problem is the road before that is as straight and as long as a runway, so there is me doing, ahem 60mph , when the road just drops away from you. I needed my pampers that day.

The Yorkshire/Lancashire Dales are great drives at the moment (F&M...).

I had the Impreza airborne with four rims and a trolly jack (it does fit!). Came down square

Definately a poo pants time but I think Ian's takes the biscuit (or at least the Pampers Award )

As you are based in the Midlands, a run from Leek to Buxton through to Bakewell is brilliant.
There is a mixture of all driving styles with some good parking and excellent food at the end of it.

Highly recommended.

There used to a fantastic road going North out of Matlock and over the Yorkshire Moors, eventually coming out in a place called Deepcar or Redcar?? Real twisty with S bends and hairpins. Anyone know if it's still like that?

The A683 was voted on of the ten best drives in the world this year.
It is off the M6 near Morecambe bay, heads inland towards Cumbria.
I wanted to drive it this summer but never got around to doing it.

Surely driving one of the worlds best roads in one of the worlds best cars must be an experience worth doing. Only bettered in a Stook convoy.

One of the best drives I've ever done is Med to Atlantic across the Pyrennes. OK it's not the UK and best split over a couple of days but it's abosultely amazing drive.

You'll be thankful for RWD at the end of it!

Oh and try not to do it when there's 10 inches of rainfall in 1 day....

You can get down to Toulouse in about 14 hrs......
