Does the MAP sensor have the little round O ring between it and the throttle housing? Oil levels all ok? Not a bit on the low side? Or how old is it - VTEC engagement relies on oil level / pressure / temperature IIRC.

  • MAPs got the O ring
  • Oil Levels OK - top it up every 500miles or so. Never goes below 2/3 - but I do need to change all the fluids in the next month or so.
  • Temp's constant

New issue though - probably related to the main one. Tried to replicate the last long trip, so warm day, constant speed / revs for about an hour, then some open throttle fun. Around 80miles in, Spat out of VTEC, but only slightly, not as hard as before. Now there's bogging down around 8k. Oil Leak on the rocker cover, drivers side near the firewall which wasn't there yesterday. Think that's the gasket gone which could mean it's loosing pressure. Been meaning to get the VA done so get a new gasket at the same time - That's on the list along with getting the daily sorted and fixed for a French GP Road Trip in two weeks. Daily's going to take priority, but as soon as I can, S is going in for a bit of TLC.

Thanks for your help guys.
Once the VA's done & new gasket is in I'll let you know if it's fixed.

Some of the FI guys fit oil temp / pressure gauges - i suspect that you're losing oil pressure at the higher end of the revs. Also check your coil packs are dry and oil free - there are seals that can get nipped or perish sitting in the rocker cover itself.

You won't lose oil pressure because the rocker cover gasket is leaking it's not part of the pressure system , it needs a good check over throttle body clean oil pressure check compression's bore scope etc etc, too late when it's gone bang

Didn't know that about the rocker gasket, always assumed the entire thing was pressurised ( but then not a mechanic) but then thinking about it, the VTEC sensor is on the head , nothing to do with the rocker cover.

If you are going to listen to anyone, listen to Dave.

Very true, looks like I'm taking the S to Dave!

The rocker cover is there just to retain spent oil (after it has lubricated the rocker shafts etc and done it's business with the vtec system) within the engine, on modern cars it is also a convenient place to hang things like cam sensors etc,

Any competent Mechanic will be able to carry out the checks you need

A small update on this - service & MOT - all fluids changed and everything seems fine - gonna keep the oil completely topped up for a bit and see if it happens again. When I've got some spare cash It's going in for a full compression check & the other bits that Dave mentioned to get checked.

Thanks again guys.
