Warped disc, bearing or something else?
Hi guys,
Please check out the video below. When I rotate the wheel there's a patch where it makes more of a disc/pad noise and I feel a bit more resistance. I can hear this rhythmic metallic noise when driving (much louder and gets louder with speed). Does this sound like a warped disc, dodgy bearing or something else?
Thanks in advance,
Rob

From what you've described it "sounds" like a bearing. Normally a bearing gives you more of a "thump-thump" sound when driving. A warped rotor will give shaking and a hot rotor at the end also.
Can you try to take off the wheel and caliper, spin the hub, is the sound still there? If you like, refit the caliper without the pads so that they are definitely not touching the rotor (obviously don't drive the car or touch the brakes, all by hand?). This would give you more conclusive direction.

I would start with the easy stuff first,
Remove the disc and make sure its mounted on a clean rust free hubface. Use a wirebrush in a drill to get it looking spotless and then mount the disc back up. Incorrect cleaning of the hub can cause lots of issues with brakes and is often overlooked by alot of garages who are in a rush to get the job done.
If you had a dial gauge you could check for hub runout to see if thats causing the problem.

Not a bearing, just something like the shield rubbing, at the very worst a warped disk, take the wheel off and try again, then back off the pads and try again. I had exactly the same noise with a small stone stuck between the disc and shield.
If it were a bearing if you rocked the wheel back and forward you would hear it.

I had a bearing fail and the noise was like rubbing your finger round a wine glass with a noticeable peak.. sort of an eek eek noise
as has been advised, pull the caliper off and see if it stops.. it does sound like a disc, that could happen if it got too hot from a sticky caliper

Thanks guys, would be great if it's not the bearing! I'll get the calliper off tomorrow and see if the noise goes away. If it does then I guess it's not the bearing and is either a warped disc or rust on the hub. I'll also check the shield, but if it was that I would have thought the noise would be constant.
