Default Weird handling

Well.... had the two rear Toyo T1R's fitted yesterday, 245 x 40 x 17 (MY04) and everything seemed fine, good grippy tyres.

After letting loose on the motorways today though i've noticed an unnerving sway, for want of a better expression, that seems to affect the rear of the car... almost as if there was flex in the tyre walls.

The car tracks straight and doesn't veer when i brake, no vibration through the car or anything... it's just this weird, slow motion, gentle "wagging" of the rear within the lane i'm travelling.

It's bad enough at higher speeds to make me back off but is'nt noticable at all at town speeds.

Anyone help?

I can't see that it's anything to do with the Bridgestones still being on the front and i hope it's not a characteristic of the tyre as i've heard good reports from people running them but there's no way i could cope with the sway at higher speeds.

Appreciate any feedback, thanks.

tyre preessures right? new tyres do need a couple of miles to bed in and get rid of the slick feeling.

Interested to hear if this sorts itself out, as I'm in the market for new fronts and rears (first time all 4 have needed replacing together) and I was pretty much settled on giving the T-1Rs a go ...

Note you fitted 245/40s. I emailed Toyo and an Alan Meaker came back to me and said I should fit 245/45 R16s to the rear (and 205/45s to the front).

I had this conversation at Wheel Worx who fitted the tyres for me and asked if it should be 245 x 45 and they assured me it didn't... the 45 being the profile or depth of the tyre wall.

I've checked the pressures and they're ok... i've done 190 miles on them today and it really is noticable at speed... so much so that if there is no problem i would consider scrapping them and going back to the Bridgestones but there's got to be something.

How much weight has been added to each wheel? It is only a guess but maybe a badly weighted wheel would communicate itself this way.

I had a front wheel in a previous car that took 60grams of weight and when I reached 70mph the steering wheel would vibrate. A rear wheel wouldn't communicate so obviously through the steering wheel.

Compare the 2 wheels and see if one has much more weights than the other or if one is missing them altogether in case they fell off.

I ask my wheel guy to rotate the tyre on the wheel if he get more than 40grams coming up on the balancing machine. Just yesterday when fitting new tyres, one went from requiring 60grams to 35grams just through rotating the tyre on the wheel.

Just cut and pasted this from the FAQ... conflicts with the info you were given and may be useful if you too have a change coming up.

The MY04 runs on Bridestone RE050s which are supposed to give improved wet weather performance.

On the front E050MZ 215/45/R17 87W
On the Rear E050MZ 245/40/R17 91W

What pressures are you running? IIRC you have to run the Toyo's at 34 or 36 because of the softer sidewalls.

In my experience I also get the balancing done twice. Let them put the weight on and they should really run the wheel through a second time to be sure it is properly balanced but a lot of places skip this step.

Thanks Rahula... that had crossed my mind, i've got 33 each side.

Think i will try them at 35 on way to work in the morning and if there's still an issue i will take her in and get the balancing checked independently.
