Default Wheel and Tyre size dilemma

Hi there.

I have finally become a S2000 owner after many years of obsession.
I currently have a MY04 bb ap1 model and it is sitting on 17" Rays 57 GO7WT gram light wheels.

The issue i have is it turns out both are 7j front and rear. the front has 225 tyres and the rear 245. Clearly these are too big for the wheels, it is more obvious on the rear as the tyre bulges over the edge.

My dilemma is that i absolutely love these wheels and have been a fan for a while, but ideally i should fit 225 tyres on the rear. The issue with that is less grip.
I notice that most of you stick 9j wheels on the back or 245 tyres like the oem ap2 wheels?

I guess my question is, do i stick with these wheels that i really like, but fit small tyres on, or do i change them for something wider, which would make the s2000 handle better and maybe slightly safer

Thank's in advance.

Antonio

If money is an issue: just run 225 all round

If money is no issue buy wider rear alloys and run a wider tyre in order to maintain a stagered setup.

Also before the AP1 Nazis turn up, no AP2 in UK only AP1 Prefacelift and facelift.

You could try a 235 tyre maybe on the rear? 7j fronts should be 215 so if you had 215 front and 235 rear you would still have a staggered fitment and a 235 wouldn't be a huge compromise on tyres in my opinion. You might have a bit of bulge but it wont be as bad as a 245.

Take a look at my signature 'will these wheels fit' thread as there is a link to a tyre size calculator which will help give you an idea what will fit on your wheels and what wont

EDIT: just took a look for you. It says that 225/40/17 will fit a 7.5 to 9" wheel and a 235/40/17 will only fit an 8 to 9.5" so what I just suggested wouldnt work. Sorry!

If you can afford to replace the rears for wider ones then I'd personally take the hit. Gram Lights are fabulous wheels!

I doubt you will notice much difference between 225 & 245 in "general" driving, but surely having a 245 over a 7" is either dangerous, or likely to drive like a boat?

With those wheels I would run 205/50 front and 225/45 rear, that would be the stock pre-facelift size but in 17".
Rears are to narrow for 225 but it should work.
It's not possible to buy just two new wider wheels for the rear?

Awesome, thanks for all the replies so far.

I am tempted to go down a size to 235, maybe even 225, just make sure i put some proper rubber on there so i maintain some good grip.

Is there any danger to the set up i am running at the moment? e.g tyre roll in corners etc?

I would prefer to buy 9j rears, but then i'l be stuck with x2 7j which would be harder to sell. In the long run i will look at other options, but short term i will have to make do.

Just had my wheel alignment done, or should i say attempted. Looks like i fall into that 'siezed bolt' category...

I'd buy 4 9j wheels so you can sell a complete staggered set on here

Piccy of the wheels?

Good idea, but it is quite tough to find these wheels now. I think i will put the stock 16s back on and sell these to someone with an ep3 or dc5.
