Hello everyone!

Bought myself a MY08 GT Moon rock with 97k miles on the clock had it a year now. Finally got round to posting up.

I had a MK5 Golf R32 DSG previously and although the noise is infectious on those cars it was too computerized for my liking and a bit too easy to drive, which meant it got boring quickly.

Absolutely loving the S, completely different driving experience, and honestly its easily taken me a year to adjust my driving style too it.

I have spent some time under the car, under the bonnet and all over, and have been carrying out servicing and some deeper stuff, in some cases it wasn’t vital but it has been essential for me to ensure the car has been maintained correctly, and for peace of mind.

So far I have carried out: -

- Replacement discs and pads all round with Honda genuine parts.

- Replacement brake fluid using Castrol react DOT 4. Bled via gravity.

- Replacement clutch fluid using Castrol react DOT 4. Bled via gravity.

- Changed the Diff oil and washers using Honda Hypoid oil.

(Previously been changed by Honda who got the fill and drain plug the wrong way round. :scratch:)

- Changed the gearbox oil and washers using Honda Genuine MTF-3

- Sprayed the rocker cover with VHT wrinkle paint.

- Fresh engine oil and filter, Castrol edge 5-40w

Deeper stuff

- Installed a replacement clutch and adjusted.

- Replaced front sub frame bolts and re torqued.

- Replaced bolts/nuts throughout exhaust system due to corrosion.

- Cleaned re-bushed and re-greased gear stick selector.

This past week i have been rust proofing the rear of the car. Had the bumper sand blasted for a start.

Removed as much as possible from the back of the car, i then used a wire brush on a drill to strip back all the loose rust and paint, also sanded the remaining painted areas heavily using 800 grit.

Bring out the POR.
Must be said, if you are thinking of using POR make sure you have the right PPE and by that i mean vapour respirator, latex gloves and goggles. Also wear a long sleeved shirt as this stuff 'sticks and stays for days'.
Buy yourself a bulk pack of disposable paint brushes, you will need a new one every time you paint as this paint cannot be stopped from curing very easily.
Once finished with the POR place a sandwich bag between the lid and tin itself then place it in the fridge. This will stop the lid bonding itself to the tin and prolong the life of the POR.
Also note that POR is UV sensitive so a top coat or two should be put over the top of it once finished to protect it !

The POR spreads very well so a little goes along way, use small amounts and apply thinly, you will regret it if its placed on too thick as this stuff runs once you have left the area :crazy:

Between coats i left the POR 24 hours to cure, you can also re-coat once the paint is super tacky to touch. Once cured i took some 1500 grit sand paper and keyed the surface as recommended by POR.

I placed 3 coats on the whole rear end and 3 coats on the bumper. The bumper is a little more tricky as the dividing baffle plates on the rear of it take some fiddling. I used a snapped in half paint brush to get into awkward areas.

Overall happy with the results
I will repost some pictures in a year or so to see how well it has held up !

Have you got any other plans for it?

Did you stick with an OEM clutch? Did you change the fly wheel? - my clutch is just starting to slip so will need attention in the near future. Unfortunately, I don't have the skills to do it myself. Honda has quoted £1,035!

Thanks for the reply, I did indeed stick with an OEM clutch, my flywheel was in very good condition so decided against changing it, just gave it a dam good clean with brake cleaner and wire wool.
It is also wise to check the pilot bearing whilst in the depths, as these can fail also. They are about £18, but i think you have to remove the flywheel to install this.

Before you even consider changing the clutch, i would check the clutch fluid, if it was like mine brown and sludgy, change it !
Also check the clutch adjustment make sure you have zero free play between the pedal and master cylinder.
Look for threads on here, there are multiple threads on both.

Changing the clutch should be your last resort :rolleyes:
