Winter refresh, Engine, Seats harness etc ready for next season

Seasons finished so time for an engine refresh, After years of abuse by the previous owner then a few gentle years with myself the last 3 competing in sprints and this year in hillclimbs as well, it had all taken it's toll with a rattle developing half way through the year and the last round throwing more oil out of the back than an uncapped oil well. So she is going to get a new set of rods and shells, piston rings, timing chain, oil pump chain, uprated retainers and oil squirter bolts plus all the usual gaskets and a baffled sump. First things first and whip off the head, bores look in good nick ,even the horrendous piston slap while cold looks to have little effect on the bore finish, next up sump off and pull the pistons

Bores look amazing, perhaps a job for a bore gauge also

A bit more stripping today followed by checking and measuring,

First up crank end float the spec when new is 0.10 - 0.35 with a service limit of 0.45 i'm glad to say mine came in at 0.18 so the crank and block can remain in situ

next up was to measure the bores and the bore spec new for a B piston is 87.000 - 87.010 with a service limit of 87.070 mine came in at 87.020 so only just outside the new limit.

Yeah all peachy at the moment but not racked many miles up on it with competing in the other black one so only 900 miles up to now but that will rise as it's now my winter beater

900 is a fair bit, how many before you relax? :D

good work Ray!

i'm planning on doing my valve clearances and shitting it about that haha. i'd prefer to bring it to you but needs to be stone cold doesnt it?

With my car being a JDM and for those interested here are a couple pictures of the pistons from a UKDM and a JDM to show the larger crown on the JDM piston to increase the compression, the JDM piston is on the right PCX 00

How close was this to a catastrophe I was beginning to think I'd jumped the ship early on the rebuild as I had one more trackday planned next Saturday before I stripped the engine but due to the blue smoke at Rockingham I decided against it,
I am so glad I did as I have over rev'd a couple of times at Oulton Park, below are the pics of the inlet valve retainers to think i was full chat at the sprint last week and pissed off we didn't get another run

I take it those are cracks in the top of the valve stem retainer? They look so regular in the photo its almost as if they were machined in.

My MY00 dropped an inlet valve at 30k miles. Engine was totally ruined. At the time no one knew about the cracking valve stem retainers and Honda replaced the engine under warranty, but with hindsight i'm sure it was a cracked valve stem retainer that caused the problem.

No that's the underside they aren't visible from the top in situ they have to be removed to see the cracks, 5 out of the 8 inlet retainers are cracked some a lot worse than others
