Correct. You get a new "Fitting Kit" with the mats and need to replace the existing one with the new one. (Unless you already had 4 piece mats.
I replaced my 2 piece mats and was quick and easy to swap the brackets over. Although need to make a small cut into the carpet in places to fit the new brackets.

My 02 already has the factory anchors in the driver's side. They appear to be bolted to the frame, so no way to remove them. I just assumed the hendy mats would have a hole the same size as the stock mats so they would easily fit in there, but that's not the case.

The factory anchors were actually installed with the mats - you should be able to remove this and fit the newer version.

The factory anchors are installed under the carpet. Is there a way to remove them without removing the carpet?

You are supposed to cut a hole in the carpet to install the new anchors/mats. Did it come with instructions? There should be a pdf or something floating around.
