I did vote in favor of the medicinal marijuana proposal that passed in Michigan. I voted for it after reading the entire law (from the eyes of a lawyer) and believing that it was sufficiently narrow in scope. On one hand, I do not believe in the recreational use of marijuana, and on the other hand, I watched a good family friend pass from kidney disease requiring painful dialysis. In that instance, illegally obtained marijuana did lessen his pain and suffering from a terminal disease. I do believe that was a proper use of marijuana and thus voted in favor of the proposal.
Since the law has passed, I believe that there are many who have in fact interpretted it too broadly (give them an inch, they'll take a mile). For example, It saddens me that there are now so many programs have been started for instucting on the proper cultivation/sale of marijuana under the act. There are far more programs teaching people how to get into this field than there will ever be registered users that really need marijuana for medicinal use. There are unfortunately too many people taking advantage of the law to support their views that marijuana is fine for recreational use and should not be subject to regulation at all.
In sum, I think that by attacking the christian right, by promoting government conspiracy theories, or even by promoting tenuous uses of marijuana as some miracle drug (which it is not) you're just going to be turning people off. No doubt there are severe instances where the drug can reduce pain and suffering, and it's unfortunate that the people that need it most will be negatively effected by an extremist viewpoint.
