Valve Adjustment Help
I was wondering if anyone is local or close to the Naperville/Woodridge would be able to help me out with a valve adjustment. I'm not that mechanically inclined but I feel pretty confident doing it myself after watching all the DIY videos. Still, I would just like to have someone whose done this before there just to make sure I don't mess up/offer advice. Free lunch included

Darn, if you were bit closer I could offer to be assistance, not that I'm some authority on the job but have done it twice. What I found most helpful was advice from recent thread about using a "goldiocks approach" with a few different sizes of feeler gauge...small, medium, large. If Medium is your target size, adjust to small (.001 less than medium), then go to medium and it should be somewhat tight and after torquing, the large feeler gauge should not fit. Also having fairly short gauges with almost 90 degree bend as some areas can be quite tight. It can be a tedious process, don't rush.

Thank you for the advice, I appreciate it!

Tedious and back breaking bending over there for an your but otherwise dirt simple.
The engine must be cold (under 100°F.) Just moving the car into the garage will exceed that temp -- gotta let it sit a few more hours. No reason to adjust the valves if they're in spec but you're in there anyway so set them to the max spec The valves tighten as they wear in and there's no documented performance improvement with minimum or medium spec valve clearance. Billman recommends 0.001 over for the 2006 and later AP2 engine exhaust. 0.012" The DBW cars. -- Chuck |
Remove the heat shield, itll make your life much easier. Then place rags along the head on the passenger side to catch dripping oil. You dont want oil to drip onto your header.

If you can wait, I can come by some time next week and help you. I've done more valve adjustments then I can count.

Thank you @jeggy , I definitely don't mind waiting at all.I'll message you my number and we can discuss further. Thank you!

Recently picked up an AP2 with 37k. Don't have much of the service history so would like to seek help on a valve adjustment as I hear on these motors they are quite critical.
Any help is greatly appreciated! Fyi, I also happen to live in Naperville ha! |
