Default Tire Wear

Quick question ... is it normal for the rear tires to wear much faster than the front? I am using Michelin Pilot Sport front and rear as a decent all-round tire for normal driving, but I get significantly less mileage on the rears. The fronts still looked good after 30,000 km but the rears were badly worn. Alignment is good so I assume that lateral cornering forces plus drive power to the road are the cause. Just curious.

Too bad tires can't be rotated due to the size difference front/rear, because that voids the Michelin 70,000 km tire wear warranty.

Yes, completely normal. I believe rears wear out twice as fast as the fronts.

I believe a lot of it has to do with the rear wheel alignment being slightly toed in.

Interesting! I didn't know about the toe-in, but I was aware that wheel setup going from AP1 to AP2 was changed to improve handling. So the wear makes sense. Tires for our 2Ks aren't exactly cheap, but hey, it's only money

Now, if we can just get some decent top-down weather so I can start wearing out the new tires .... my 2K is sulking in the carport. Sadly I won't be able to make the Baker run again this year.

I got about 15k miles out my rear Pilot sports and the front had about 5/32 left. My car is street driven and I don't spin the tires or anything but a I do corner pretty hard at times. You made it a little further than I did so yeah that's about right.

Wow! Only 15K on the Michelins? That seems a bit low. I do tend to corner hard (it's fun!) but don't spin the tires at all. I managed to get almost 30K over 3 summers, at which point the rears were down to less than 1mm. My car is not anywhere near a daily driver, so I barely manage 10K per year. Most of it is highway or country-roads driving, not a lot of city stop-and-go. I really can't complain.

Oops! That one escaped me, but yes, that is a reasonable number now that the fog in my brain has cleared
