Hey all need some replacement tires for my S2K. It still has the original tires on it just turned 30K.

Went out and have a flat and they are so old they need to go anyways...

Car is in south and only driven in good weather

I was looking at Bridgestone's S02 or RE71R? What other options should I look at? Looks like there’s no Pilot sports that fit.

 

Continental ExtremeContact Sport is what I am going with on mine when I am ready. Stock wheels and stock sizes. Can't beat them for $500/set in my opinion. There is even a $70 rebate on Tire rack.

 

The Firestone Firehawk Indy 500 tires are rebadged versions of the highly regarded Bridgestone S003 tires and will only run you $360 after the current factory rebate. These are good tires especially since you don't drive the car much,

Any of the TW200 tires are going to be noisy. If you're not going to be doing track days or autocross, I would suggest a Max / Ultra High Summer tire for a good balance between comfort and performance. The Firehawk and Continental Sport are good choices as mentioned previously.

I have the Continental DWS (all-season) on 16" wheels for winter and Bridgestone S-04 on 17" for summer. It can be fun to drive with the all-season tires in the dry because they give up easily and you can really slide the AP1 around. However, they are not for any serious driving.

 

As others mentioned, I highly recommend the Continental ExtremeContact Sports. Especially if you are more daily focused with occasional track days or autocross. If you’re in it to win it, you will get a dedicated set of 200 treadwear tires and probably a completely different set of wheels.

 

Are the stock Tire Rack sizes as big as you can go on stock rims?

 

Bigger is not better, especially up front. I'd say if you are driving on street the choice is probably the Contis or the Firehawks. I have contis now and I like them. Might try Firehawk next time.

 

Bigger tires up front will acerbate the oversteer problem with the earlier cars. This can be severe in the very early cars if you're inattentive. Bigger front tires make it worse.

I don't know what tire sizes are available in 16" diameter. With 17" wheels it's common to get tires 10mm wider. On these "AP2" wheels the fronts are 215 and can go to 225 without fitment issues; likewise moving from 245 to 255 on the rear.

For a car rarely driven I'd not spend much time or money on exotic tires. If you want better handling the 17" wheel offer many more choices and are a common change. AP2 wheels bolt right on with no hassles.

Only been out for a couple of drives on my new Firehawks, as it only stops raining here for one day a week this spring. The wife was with both times, so I couldn't give them a proper test. I'm liking them so far however.
