Range of tire width on wheel

Generally, what's the range of tire width that you can safely fit onto a particular wheel? For example, the AP2 stock rears are: 17" x 8.5", +65 offset, 245 tire

What's the recommended tire width range for this wheel? 235 - 255? Is there an ideal size (245)?

Is tire "bubbling" a problem when the wheel is too narrow for the tire? Any insight appreciated.

245 and 255 are fine, that's OEM (non-CR and CR).

265, if it even fits, will cause a screwy contact patch and wear poorly.

Generally, a lot of it depends on the specific tire and wheel. Some wheels are trickier to mount than others, and some tires have big rim guards around the edge.

If you check out a tire on The Tire Rack website, (or any manufacturer's site for that matter), click on specs, and it will tell you the recommended range of rim widths. It will also list the size they used to determine measurements, as contact patch can change slightly depending on rim width used.

Since a 255/40/17 calls for an 8.5" -10" wide rim, an 8.5" is not going to push the sidewall out, and that will minimize contact patch.

A 265/35/18 needs a 9"; so does a 265/40/17....

Thanks guys!

At max IMHO, I would run a 255/225 combo on stock AP2 wheels. Keep it simple
