Okay, so I can't make up my mind on after market wheels. In the mean time, I would like to refinish the stock ones since I've got some curb rash on a couple. Even when I get new wheels, I'll probably keep the stock ones for winter tires and put the summer tires on the new ones...so I don't mind spending some money now on the stocks.

I think I want to try a black chrome...or as close as I can get to Works 'Burning Black.' I don't want to sound like an idiot when I start calling around to get prices. What needs to be done to accomplish this? I assume the paint on the stock wheels needs to be taken off...so, do they usually sandblast them? How do they prepare wheels for a refinish?

Then, are there different 'color codes' for chroming parts like there are for paint codes? Can I look somewhere to see different options so I can can tell the shop I want it chromed with XXXX?

Stock wheels are most definitely painted

OR, at the very least, they have some type of colored clear coat. Regardless, this finish will have to be dealt with before you can chrome...

 

If you are going the powder coat route, I would reccomend this outfit.

They are a small shop, but are doing a good ebay business in powder coat and have a number of pics showing samples of their work. I had them chrome powder coat my valve cover, sparkplug cover, intake manifold, tower strut mounts and alternator halves. I am not sure they do "black chrome" powdercoat. I am not sure there is a "black chrome" powder. It may be a paint only process. Anyway these guys treated me well and helped me make informed decisions on how some powder goes on some pieces. They may be able to help you.

Keep us informed, this may be an option for my wheels as well.
