tire tread question, when to replace?
please no flames, i tried the search first but never really found an answer. is there a quantitative measurement for when the tire should be replaced? i'm going on 9k miles and drive it pretty easy (cept when i go to the track which is about three times per year). i have about 1/8" of tread on the backs and about 3/16" on the fronts. is it time? can i milk some more easy driving and just avoid the track (if that's possible) for awhile?

Wait until you see no treads toward inside. You will know because car's handling becomes squirmy.

Use your tire's wear bars as a guide. That's what they are there for. When the wear bars first start to show, that's when you should start to hunt for new tires.

The wear bar is at 2/32". They are legally worn out at that point. If you go down that far wou will have bad wet traction at that point so slow down.
If I can help let me know. Thank you Jim 800-428-8355-364 |
I had to replace my OEM rear tires just before I got to the wear bars, maybe a 1/16" above the wear bars. I had 12,000 miles and they started to hydroplane in the rain. In my book, once the tires start to hydroplane, it's past time to replace them. It pays to keep a close eye on them when they are close to being worn out.
