So I ordered my tires through tire rack like a lot of people on here do and they were setting around for awhile and I decided to get them mounted today.

A little back ground.... I am currently in college and had the tires delivered to my parents house about 60 miles away.


Today I got up a little early and drove back home and had a friend with a truck go with me to the local walmart super-center to have the tires mounted. I go to the front desk and let them know I already have the tires and would just like them mounted. I also instructed them that the tires are staggered and the bigger ones go on back. At this point the clerk stops me and says "we cannot do that" . I asked what she was talking about and she said she would have to look at the tires. So we go out and she looks at them and says "yea we cant do this here. We are only allowed to put the same size tires on a car." I told her that the car came like that from the factory and then she told me that if they put different sizes on the front and back it would cause me to over steer and crash and then I would sue them....

I asked if I brought the owners manual in and showed her it came that way from the factory and she said it didn't matter. After that I got a little heated and started laying into her about how Honda owned a formula one team and used racing heritage to develop the car along with the staggered tires and asked what kinda of racing experience walmart had. In the end she said " I don't care how many formula one victories Rhonda has we are not going to do it"


So this is just me bitching about walmart...... Sorry if I wasted 5 mins of your life but thanks for reading

 

rumor has it they aren't allowed to sell directional tires because they don't trust their employees enough to put them on the right way...

 

just gotta find the right walmart.
i got plenty of tires mounted there with no hassel $5 to mount and $5 to balance

Take your tires & wheels to a wheel store. They deal with high dollar wheels daily. They can mount and balance your tires without screwing up your wheels.

You do know that Tire Rack can ship tires to "recommended installers" (who would also not likely balk at mounting staggered tires), so you don't have to truck them around, right?

 

Ha...I wouldn't even consider having walmart mount my tires. When I got my CE28's I took them to the nearest Porsche dealer to get the tires mounted and balanced. I figured these guys mount low profile tires on crazy expensive wheels daily, so they have the proper equipment & experience to do it without marring the wheels. They came out perfect, not a mark...I don't even know how they do it without putting grip marks on the wheel from the tire machine.

 

Yeah, though dont fully trust those installers either. I am now in the camp of 'take them to a wheel shop' or something similar like that guy who took them to a porsche dealer. I learned it the hard way. One of the tirerack installers damaged one of my wheels even though their thing said that they specialize in custom wheels. Getting ready to contact the installers home office here shortly

Oh, and tirerack and Jim have been helpful with this whole thing, so nothing against tirerack... it was just an issue with that installer. I am hoping that tirerack decides to take them off their list. For some soccer-mom's minivan I am sure that this place will be fine, but they shouldnt be allowed to touch a 'nice' wheel.
