Default Why are 225/40 tires soo expensive?!?

I have checked several sites and it seems that the 225/40 tires are almost impossible to find or double the price of 235/40 tires. Is there a major difference in width between 225/40 and 235/40?

The reason i am asking is because i just purchased 17X9 +47F 17X9 +35R VS-XX's and i wanted to run 225/40 in the front and 245/40 in the rear. But it seems like i will have to run 235/40 in the front and 245/40 in the rear.

That's cause you should run 225/45 not 225/40
That's an off size so going to be more expensive.

I am struggling with the same issue.

Need to go to 225/35 or 215/45 and I cannot decide which way to go...(17x8 rim)

So the 225/45 will still perform/look the similar to the 225/40? I am asking because i don't want the tires/wheels to look weird if i run 225/45 up front and 245/40 in the rear.

215/45 are the stock sizes for my 06 ap2 upfront.. If you go 35 i believe the profile will be very thin and cause your car to run stiffer than what it already does. Im at 225/45 upfront on a 17x8 rim with no problem..
225/35 is a very rare size and probably going to cost you more due to lack of availability

Do you know if there will be any rubbing issues with a 235/40 tire up front on a 17X9 +47 rim? I guess i will either have to go 235/40 or 225/45. I just don't want the front tire to look taller than the rear if i decide to go 225/45 up front and 245/40 in the rear.

I tore my fender up with 225/45s on a 17x8 +45 with something like -2.x* camber and just a trimmed fender liner and bent up fender tabs. A nasty incline lipped out my fender. I hammered it back in place and that's where I sit now... But with 215s instead

Most OE manufacturer opt the 45 profile for ride quality and overall diameter for rotation calibration.
I think one of the reason 225/40 are generally more expensive is because the amount of quantity sold/"demand". Which drives down the "supply" and drives up "cost"...

When one lowers their car with stiffer suspension, the fender gab and suspension travel are both reduced. With less travel, you generate less dynamic camber, and the chance for fender contact because much higher. Even at -2 camber, if you are not allowing enough travel you are not much better than taller ride height with less camber. But then again, you are going to have that wheel/fender gab and defeats the purpose to lower it in the first place.

Other than to get the correct offset, or to roll/pull the fender. Your best bet is to run slightly higher ride height and allowing more suspension travel to generate more camber angle on compression with slightly lower spring rates.

Or if you have double adjustable shocks. Up the bound setting might help with too. But handeling and ride quality may suffer a bit...

I don't think you understand how tire sizing works. A 225/45 would have a profile of 225 x .45 = 101.25. A 245/40 would be 245 x .4 = 98. Their profile and heights would be pretty similar.

A 225/40 would be 225 x .4 = 90. Way too short. THAT would look weird.

I agree with the too thin of a sidewall on the 225/35.

I am sure you can get away with a 225/45 up front all day, but do you have a +36 wheel like I do? lmao

There is a 225/35/27 by Yokohama that is retail for 130 on tire racks website, but you are right. I should get the 215/45 as that is the oem size, and in chicago the 35 profile is gonna make my kidneys bleed (or bend my sexy BBS wheels easier).

Thank you for the advice s2ki!!!!
