will 235 fit 17x8.5 fine? will 225 fit?
 

If I had a 17x8.5 wheel would I be able to fit 235 or 225 tire no problem or would it look retarded and stretched?

I tried to shop for tires by wheel side on tire-rack, but they only browse by car make. I might purchase some non staggered wheels but kinda want to maintain the stock staggered tire sizes as close as possible. I wanted to run maybe 225 front and 255 back and later move to square tire sizes when i get more experience behind the wheel.

you can run a 235/255 setup on 8.5" wheels no problem.

Finding rims with a correct offset to run them is a different story, especially for the front ;) you are going to want a around a 60+ offset front for a 8.5" wide wheel.

Except that the tires are taller than the original tires. Depending on the offset of the wheels they could also rub especially on bumps..
