Default Winter tires?!?

This may be a dumb question (considering the nature of the S2000), but does anyone have any suggestions on improving the S2K's handling in snow? I was surprised last weekend by a snowstorm in Baltimore, and had to drive my S2K on VERY bad roads. I knew that the car wouldn't handle well in the white stuff, but I've ridden on toboggans that handled better. I won't go the chains route, but have considered snow tires. I don't know how standard my tires are (OEM Bridgestone Potenza S-02), but they stink in snow. Should I do snow tires, or should I downgrade the set I have to all-season radials?

Thanks,
Paul

All season radials are a misnomer. They should be called 3 season radials. If snow is an issue for a significant amount of days where you live, then dedicated snow tires are the only way to go. I go with Blizzaks on the back and Goodrich Winter Slaloms on the front. I could've gone with Blizzaks on the front too but I'm just cheap. Other folks have done quite well with other brands of snow tires too. This is my second winter on these tires and driving on snow & ice is not a problem.

I agree with Xviper. If you plan on spending any time on snow covered surfaces then dedicated snow tires are the only way to go. I use Yokohama Guardex 600s and I've pulled myself out of fairly deep snow and driven on ice and snow encrusted highways with no problems so far (of course, the season is young).

When my rears went bald I went out and just got some cheap all season tires and still have my SO-2's on the front. I know, bad combination. But through the three or so snows up here I haven't had any problems at all. This combo is working for me.

Lightning: How do the pirellis handle on highways and corners? I have the pirelli 210As before and liked them, unfortunately they are not available anymore. I've got Toyo Garits right now but the highway handling is not very good (i've been told it will get better with time) so I'm thinking about other options since I have a 30 day return perioud.

Well, I bit the bullet and purchased a new set of rims and a set of Dunlop Winter Sports (205's all around--I can actually rotate these tires:-)). Thanks to Jim from Tire Rack for his help--4 rims and tires for about $1,000. Not too bad, if you ask me. Of course, now it won't snow anymore this winter and I'll have to guess whether or not it was worth it.

XViper--
The wheels are ASA JS6's and the tires are Dunlop Winter Sport M2s. The wheels look pretty good, especially considering the price. As you said, I could have paid more than I did just for the wheels. Again, Jim at the Tire Rack steered me in the right direction (sorry for the pun).
