Winter wheel size for AP2
This may have been covered in the past, but I'm an S2K noob and having trouble separating AP1 advice from AP2.
I'm considering an AP2 as a year-round DD, but I'm concerned about buying the car now and immediately having to put down another load of cash for new winter wheels. Looking at Tire Rack in the winter wheel/tire packages, there are only a few options, with staggered wheel sizes. I found some threads mentioning running 205's all around, but I'm not sure if that pertains only to the AP1 -- see below. I'm thinking I may even be able to find a used set of wheels more easily, if the sizes work out. Is there a possibility of using e.g. the General Altimax Arctic 205's with the AP2, and if so, what size wheel would be correct? Thank you!

I had Blizzaks on my Trans Am and the car did great. My family has also had good experience with them in RWD cars: my stepdad's S-Type R (390hp, 4.2 supercharged), my mom's old Boxster, and her current XKR (420hp, 4.2 supercharged). As long as you drive properly for the conditions you will get through almost anything in the winter. The only time you will run into problems will be when the snow is above the frame of the car or if you happen to be stuck in the unfortunate position of coming to a stop on an incline covered in ice. No tire will get you out of that situation.
I have been running General Altimax Arctic on the S2000 for the past two winters in 205/225 stagger size and they have done just as well as the Blizzaks in the snow and ice. They are a lot worse on dry pavement though--I can reach the limit of grip far sooner on the Generals than I could with the Blizzaks. This only matters if you are like me and want to push your car on those in-between-snow days when the roads are clear but you still have your stupid snow tires on :p |
Yes, you can run ap1 sizes on an ap2 and be fine. I run the 205/55-16 Generals front and rear on stock ap1 wheels and it works well. Still stress out driving the s2k in snow though.

You can always message Jim, from the TR, for his opinion. I run Ap1 sized Dunlops (staggered) on my Ap2.

The cheapest option is buying a set of OEM ap1 wheels and putting winter tires on them. This is what I see most people do for winter wheels if they have to drive the S int he winter.
