Default 17 inch or 18 inch?

There are some debates as to whether 17 inch wheels or 18 inch wheels are the way to go. Ofcourse there are the more obvious pros and cons such as 17 inch wheels would be a little lighter than a comparable 18 inch wheels. Then again 18 inch wheels would fill the fender well a little nicer, but offer a rougher ride. One thing that I have been debating about is whether 18 inch tires on 18 inch wheels would offer overall better performance than a 17 inch tires on a 17 inch wheels. any thoughts?

Are you planning to use these wheels for track use, or just regular street? If street, and you don't have too many potholes, I think a nice set of 18s would look very sweet. For track, however, I'm going with the Volk CE28N in 17x7.5 and 17x9. Not too small, not too big. 18s would be a bit too heavy unless you went with a ~$5000 setup of HRE or Fikse. Plus I'd like a little extra sidewall for those lawn-mower incidents.

so let me get this straight.. you're saying that even if an 18" wheel had the EXACT same weight as it's 17" counterpart, the 18" wheel would still have a disadvantage in a drag race due to a smaller vertical contact patch???

You are missing one of the most important points. Larger diameter yeilds slower times. Secondly, the larger the diameter, the most delicate the wheel will be. Yes, you can go out and buy some HRE or Fikse wheels in the larger diameter for a lighter wheel, but you will bend them.

I recommend you play it smart and safe and put no larger than 17" wheels for track. If you are "all show" and "no go", go with the 18" wheels; the most wheel, the better the look
