Falken FK510 & General G-Max RS?
Has anyone tried either of these? I'm looking to buy a set of more daily friendly summers for my AP1 and these are both available in 255/40/17 for cheap (for ultra high performance summer tires).
I'll probably end up with a set of the Firestone Indy 500, but maybe these are worth a look?

Is this based in any actual experience or just blindly going with the status quo?

I have already gone through a set of the Firehawk Indy 500s. I was very impressed with the performance for the $$$. General doesn't make any good tires, and Falken only makes 2 mediocre tires- the 510 isn't one of them.

So you've not used either of them then.

I haven't used either of those tires but I did look for "tire ratings" at the Tire Rack and I don't see either of those tires on the ratings page. I bought a set of Sumitomo HTR Z II tires(5 or 6 years ago) and they were junk(didn't know about the ratings page) took them off and sold them in less than 500 miles, 4 for the price of 3, then got the D/W and they were 10 times better than the Sumitomo tires. If you look at the ratings page the Firestone are at the top and that is what I'm running now and I like them.

If you don't trust the ratings page or you don't mind taking a chance, buy either one of those tires and give us your review of the tires. Weather you like them or not, your review will help others when its time to buy tires.

Lol, slightly off topic but, the Falken RT615K+ (the updated version with newer compound) is probably better than mediocre,

Even the old RT615K had the Z2 Starspec compound. I have the K+ on my car & very much like them, I imagine they'd be quite quick on a track. I'm just moving them to my other set of wheels & want something more rain friendly than them for my Advans.

Well then, it seems the folks at tire rack justified this thread:
FK510 & GMAX RS both rated well above the Indy 500.

Did they?
The Firestone were better in Cornering Stability, Steering Response, Braking Modulation, Handling Predictability and Overall Track Rating on a dry test track.
Then on "REAL WORLD ROAD RIDE RATINGS" the Firestones had a better Handling number, not the best number for Ride Comfort and Noise Comfort, well I don't buy tires for my S for comfort and I sure can't hear my Firestons when just driving down the road. Now in the wet the Firestones don't have the best numbers but they're not the worst either. I don't push my S when its wet, I've seen way to many that have and paid the price(with a car that is totaled). When its raining or wet I just go into sightseeing mode.

Like I said in a previous post, if you want to try one of those tires out go get a set and let us know how you like them after a few thousand miles. We can never have enough good choices for tires, the more tires that work good on the S the better it is for all of us. More tire choices also gives us a chance to save money because of rebates or get a better price on the tires you want by pitting one tire co. against another, even if they don't come all the way down most will come down on price to make a sale.
