Default First time poster re tires.....conflicted and need help!!

Hi all,

Long time lurker here on S2ki for little tips and tricks and general knowledge regarding my bone stock API 2002 S2K with 67 000 miles. Long story short I need some help with tires and need to make a decision quick.

I ran the stock S-02's for years and I loved the grip they offered but as I only drive this car in the summer and almost 100% basic street driving around town, I never loved the wear and tear. The previous owner who I bought the car off of had adjusted the toe & camber as he tracked the car, but I never. This also lead to added wear on multiple sets of tires until I decided I was going to go for a tire with more wear. 4 years ago I drove down from Canada and went to a Costco in Montana and purchased 4 RE760 Sport. I liked the tire as the road noise was low, the grip was very decent although nothing compared to the S-02's and the wear has been decent so far, I am at 18 000 miles or so on the rears and they have 3/32 left.

I had a nail in the tire and took it to Costco up here in Alberta, Canada and they said they couldn't repair it due to location, they will warranty the tire for approx $25 and since the RE760's are discontinued, they will warranty cross axle and give me 100% credit on the other one.

In essence, I get one free tire for approx $160 in value and $25 off the 2nd one. I am only being given a few options and I am conflicted on which I should select. I have the RE71-R and the BFG G Force Sport Comp 2. I am only replacing my rears as my fronts are at 70+% . I don't track my car, I only drive in the city or a little-spirited highway driving. I don't mind the wear this time around as I am getting a really good deal with the warranty but I do drive the car right up until end of Oct or early November and then garage for the upcoming winter. The overnight temperatures can be in the high 30's by than.

Am I fooling myself and the use for the Re71R given my situation and go with the BFG for overall comfort, noise, grip and wear? I am kinda thinking I might try the Re71r's since my out of pocket expense is like $110 US for 2 new tires and it would be cool to see the grip of these bad boys.

Thoughts? Sorry about the long post! Thanks in advance

You need four (4) matched tires (brand & tread pattern) for competent handling on the S2000. RE71R tires are noisy and overkill but overkill always works. These are classified as Extreme Performance. The BFGs are classed at Ultra Performance and at least two grades lower on the performance scale. Scale is largely related to grip and "Ultra" is the third tier down.

A complete set of 16" Goodrich G-Force Sport Comp-2 or highly regarded Firestone Firehawk Indy 500 (Bridgestone SO3s with different lettering) tires retail for less than US$400. These are both Ultra rated (3d tier). A set of Bridgestone S007A (which I believe replaces the RE71R) runs under US$550.

I'd get the Sport Comp 2 for your needs.

But I'd replace the fronts too.

They are replacing the re-11. The re71r is not going anywhere any time soon.

Go with the the BFG comp 2. They are a lot more comparable in driving characteristics as far as dry traction, wear and rain evacuation.
The increased traction of the 71r might seem appealing, but they wear really fast. If you don't actually push the car, there is no point.

The 17" RE-11A tires left us at least two years ago and why I have the S-04 tires at present. Both the RE71R and S007A are Extreme Performance Summer tires, the S007A is new and I expect will eventually replace the now redundant RE71R tire which replaced and made the RE-11A redundant. Guess we'll have to wait and see. Extreme Performance level tires are niche and I'd not expect Bridgetown to have multiple, competing tires at that level.

Jesus Christ just cut your losses and acknowledge youre wrong. The RE71R is THE track tire. The RE71R will be replaced when Bridgestone makes something faster, the S007A is a very different extreme summer that is longer wearing and more street oriented.

I have a set of those Goodrich tires in stock sizes on my oem ap1 rims. They are surprisingly good for street driving. If you will be driving in the cold at all, and you want one set of wheels and tires, that is the way I would go. But, if you want a good warm weather tire for summer only, I'd recommend the Firestones based on the reports here. That, or the Continental Extremecontact Sport tires which is what i am using now and I am very happy with them. These all come in ap1 sizes.

Highly recommend the Continental ExtremeContact Sports for daily setup on the AP1 sizes. They are a great daily tire, excellent performance in the wet, and a perfect mild track tire with a mileage warranty to boot. If you’re looking for track times then get the RE71Rs, else I recommend the Continentals.
