Is there any Michelin Pilot Sport combination. It doesn't seem like they are available in those sizes (at least at Tire Rack) for the 04+ setup. I have had good experiences with those on other vehicles and was hoping to keep using them. They are a bit pricey though.........
Yes, there are good Michelin fitments

Pilot Sport PS2 in 225/45R17 and 255/40R17 -- I had a set of these and they were awesome on the road with an uncanny behavior at the limit, but not the best for autocross.

Pilot Exalto PE2 in 215/45 R17 and 245/40R17 -- i.e. stock sizes -- I just mounted a set of these and they seem really good with a plus of exceptional comfort and very progressive at the limit. Maybe not the same level of grip as the PS2's, but they cost almost 30% less.

How about 215/45/17 PE2 in the front and 245/40/17 PS2 in the back?

Alright im kind of confused after reading all of this information! i know its simple and easy to comprehend but im confusing my self! I have a 215 45x17 all around on my ap2v1's im looking to go 245-45-17 in the rear. Having a 45 wall in the front and a 40 wall in the rear..? that wont mess up the handling? will in improve with the two different sizes from rear to front?

Thanks!!

If u have 215 all the way around on stocks then that is a problem. Yes 45 front and 40 rear for a 215/40/17 front and 245/40/17 in the rear is fine. 245/45/17 is too tall of a side wall for the rear.

i understand that the contact patch on the stock Bridgestone Potenza RE050 is 6.7".

for any other tire in the same size, the contact patch is much larger (8"+).

my question to all you ppl out there is: Do you prefer the quickness of the steering with the smaller contact patch (but OEM size) of 6.7"? or do you like the oversteering, but better grip of the larger contact patches, that the other tires usually have, in the same size spec of rubber?

The difference in front tire thread will not be that much, maybe an extra inch of actual rubber touching the road. Even if you just buy OEM, but go 1 size up to 225, the car should be more balanced due to the reduction in understeer (as the car is supposed to behave from factory) if your car is otherwise stock.

If you car is modded, then its a different story.

well i just measured my star specs. 215s are ~8 inches and the 245s are ~9 inches. i really want 255s in the rear...but if i dont up the 215s as well, i will regain the factory understeer. so do i create understeer or make the turn in feel slightly less crisp...ugh i need to make a decision and order these already
