How to store max performance tires?

Lately I've noticed on some of the car shows, during messy bodywork, etc, they just use plywood wheels. Just a tire size circle of plywood with some lug stud holes drilled.
I imagine you can push a car around in a ship ok on such, but perhaps not actually drive it powered by engine.

You will notice the difference between ones that have been properly stored vs allowed to freeze mostly when really driving to the limits. For my autox tires (I live here in the Twin Cities) I store them in a heated part of the house (my wife does deal with a set of tires in bags in the back bedroom lol ) . This winter I left them on the car, mostly because they are near done and I will be buying a new set. With that being said though, I normally keep the garage above 50 degrees, but it does hit near freezing when we are away for a while, so they really do not see much cold in there. They saw below freezing under use last year though, since our next to last autocross event at Canterbury Park had snow :P

My gut feeling is that for max performance and lower storing the tires on or off the car all winter in below zero temps is not going to hurt the tires unless you are flexing them before they are allowed to warm up a day or two. I have stored max performance tires outside in my garage in below zero winters with no apparent bad consequences. They never get moved at all until they have warmed up in the spring.
