Went for an annual safety inspection today and while I passed, the tech said the tires won't pass next year.

I've got the original Potenza's on my MY08 which are now on the order of 9+ years old.

So, I've decided to change all four.

I had pretty much decided just to replace the RE050's until I saw the RE-071R's on TireRack.Seems to me the 071R's are cheaper and better performing.

Would someone with an AP-2 that's used the RE-071R's weigh in on your opinions?

I just went through this and bought the Continental Extremecontact Sport. I don't track and to me these are better then either option you listed for driving on regular roads.

Out of the 2 you mention I would get RE-071's, but they are overkill for public roads and will be noisier over time.

These are completely different tires, seems like a strange comparison. RE050 are a really old design, definitely don't get those again as they weren't event that great when new. RE-71 is basically a R compound, performance is great but comes with all the trade-offs (noise, tread wear, etc.).

You didn't really specify what kind of use the car gets, but I'm guessing you would be better served with:

Bridgestone S04
Continental ExtremeContact Sport
Michelin Pilot Super Sport
Firestone Firehawk Indy500

The good news is that even the most expensive option of the Michelin PSS is cheaper that RE050.

Run the Firehawk Indy500 tires. They are dirt cheap, grip incredibly well for the price, and last. I've got a set with 6 trackdays and 10k miles on my E46 330i daily driver, I've also got a 255/40 square set of RE71R on my S2000 and it is basically a track only tire that heat cycles out, covers your car with rubber, flings stones all day, and doesn't last very long.

I ran RE050s on both my S2000s until the RE71r caught my eye. They warned me saying "it will be overkill!" But then again whole S2000 is overkill anyway.
I bought a set.
They were right. It was overkill and it did wear down kinda quick.
I'm gonna buy another set.

I used to daily the car to work about 22 miles a day and switch out to Blizzaks in the winter. I don't daily any more but love the grip that these tires are giving me. I also stepped up a size to 225/255

After sleeping on it, I'm going to fall back to my old friend and go with the Michelin Pilot Super Sport's.

i'm in the same boat and trying to find some tires to run in the summer (no track use)
the only companies that do 235/40 and 255/40 except for yoko ad08's and direzza zii star specs.

leaning towards the zii's. any advice?
any feedback on yoko s.drives?

i would have loved to go MPSS, but unfortunately they don't do the above sizes

I stuck with 245/215's, this car doesn't need bigger for the street, it's not a powerful car by any means. I don't know why people are infatuated with getting the widest tires possible.

there seems to be a lot more options if i go 225/45 and 255/40

I would stick with that, I love MPSS, but tried the Continental this time due to the amount of folks here that talk about the MPSS taking away from the S2000 due to the sidewall. I'm not sure if the Continental is that much better, but so far I'm happy.
