math is a little off. ZIII in 255/40/17 =$220 and Rival S 1.5 =$237 which makes the ZIII $68 cheaper per set, not $30 more.
Still a hefty price jump over the 71R or RS4.

Might give the Dunlops a go over the 71R's for the $100 premium.

You are correct...I think I was looking at 245 square for B/Street rather than 255 square for STR.

I will wait until some folks get a set and do some testing. The tread pattern is nearly identical to the RE71r, so that was probably their benchmark. It still took them over 2 years to come out with the tire. The $64k question: did they gain an advantage? BFG is so close to the RE71r that an advantage, if any, is only visible to the top drivers. The cost of an autocross weekend is equal to the price difference, so the price would be a secondary factor behind the performance. For street only, I go with the Michelin P4S, or if price were a big issue, the Contis,

How does the Federal RS-RR or Hankook RS4 compare to the top auto-x tires? I'm looking for something fast, but want the tires to last longer than RE-71Rs if possible (doing a mix of auto-x and HPDE).

In autocross, there are few runs (most events have less than 6 minutes total track time) and can be very competitive, often with cars just like yours. Each class has tight rules, so a car prepared for HPDE may find itself disadvantaged because of mods for the track that don't help in an autocross.

As a result, tires are important. The RS4 is slower than the RE71r or Rival 1.5. However, it is close enough to be competitive if you aren't at the pointy end of a competitive class. I have no idea how competitive the Federal is.

For HPDE longevity comes important, as is handling (in autocross handling is sometimes sacrificed for lap times). Others can comment on the Federal 595 RS-RR vs the RS4. There is also the Nexen SUR4G and Maxxis VR-1 in the low price category. There is also the Yokohama Advan A052. It doesn't fit in some autocross classes because of stock tread depth, but some reviews have it ahead of the RE71r in performance with equal or better handling.

Their absolute grip probably won't last nearly 10 days, but fresh Rivals S1.5 are coated in unicorn tears.
