255/35/18 is the widest I would recommend. For wider you really need a wide wheel. You should also try searching and providing more details before posting these very generic questions.

I run 275/35-18 NT01s on 18x9.5 wheels at the back of my FD for street and track. It is a perfectly cromulent fitment...

275/30-18 would have the correct diameter. Technically you could run 285/30-18 on 18x9.5, that would be the widest...

Im sure you can stuff a 295/30/18 (Advan A052s for example) on then...but you're not considering sidewall geometry, fender clearances, and it will probably hurt the cornering performance. But hey...if you're building a drag car, go nuts.

265 is considered the optimum for 9½" rims for most manufacturers tyres, however chose manufacturer in this size (265/35 x 18) and see what they specify as the optimum .

"optimum" would be matching the tires section width to the rim width so no that wouldn't be necessarily true. I've never seen a manufacture list the optimum rim width to their tire spec, its rather always seems to be right in the middle of the range. For example, 255/40/17 with a typical section width of 10.3" would be a 10" wide wheel max. However the min to max is listed with a 8.5 to 10" with the tires measurement based on somewhere in the median width wheel such as a 9" - which is what a 9.5" to 265 paring would be.

Check the tire manufactures spec on the tire, and size the wheel to that and hope the tire spec is accurate. I do find some discrepancies sometimes.

I'm gathering from a few other of the OP's posts that he is not concerned with optimum, but extreme maximum (for reasons he's not divulging)...so I'd say 295/30/18 is the gross limit.

And the sidewall being pinched so far that it ends up being a 265 worth of rubber on the ground at any one time anyway, with the compounded effects of shitty handling.

When I was running a 295/35/17 on this car it was mounted on a 11.5" wide wheel, and it had just the right amount of pre load on the sidewall.
