1. Koni Yellow shocks with Swift Spec R springs

Sometimes we just want a simple, but reliable drop, that doesn’t break the bank. Koni Yellows with Swift Spec R springs are just that. Koni yellow shocks are built to out perform stock components, with long lasting internals and seals, and can handle lowering springs a bit better than stock parts. These shocks also have adjustable damping, but Koni will also build you a custom setup to your specification. These are often considered the best budget shock upgrade.

Swift Spec R Springs offer a 1.25” drop, and slighted stiffen the ride with spring rates of 7.5kg in the front and 7kg in the rear. There are lots of positive reviews regarding their comfortable ride, and they are often suggested for those looking for a basic street setup.

2. Club Racer Shocks with Swift Spec R Springs

The Honda Club Racer was introduced in 2009 as the perfect S2000 factory performance package, with its most notable upgrade being the suspension. While the Club Racer shocks are made by Showa, and are non-adjustable, they have stiffer spring rates and often are used to upgrade the handling of a stock S2K. Those looking to get a more aggressive drop, will pair the Showa shocks with Swift Spec R Springs. They can handle modest drops well, and when combined with an excellent spring such as Swift Spec R, make for an excellent street setup.

Although since cost is very similar to Koni Yellows, most people opt for aftermarket instead.

3. Bilstien B14 PSS or B16 PSS9

There’s always a question of aftermarket affordability, and Bilstein B14 PSS are one of the first suspension kits to prove that less expensive doesn't always mean poorly built. The PSS set is a prime choice for those looking to upgrade without worrying about adjustment. This simple coilover system allows a height adjustment of 35mm, and can raise or lower the car without affecting the spring rate or preload of the coils.

The PSS9s are an upgrade, and offer a full range of adjustability, including 9 dampening settings and a 30 - 50mm lowering range. Not only that, but they are very reliable, able to stand against even the harshest of environments.

5. Ohlins DFV

Raising the price point some allows us to check out Ohlins. Suggested by most to be a really good high end upgrade, the DFV system provides fantastic damping and features. The unique valving is designed to allow the wheel to quickly adjust according to the surface conditions, with different valves for sudden bumps, and the compression of cornering. This occurs through its special dual flow valve (DFV) system, that allows three paths for oil. The shocks also have a temperature reactive bleeder valve that opens or closes depending on heat, as well as 46mm diameter pistons. This system has been hailed as one of the best suspension avaialble, and S2ki member Gernby did an in-depth review, that shows just how much this kit has to offer.
