1. When we may hear something

Insiders are suggesting that sometime around the 70th anniversary of Honda, which will come in 2018, the all-new version of the S2000 will be announced. The S660 roadster, that some were calling the S2000 successor, won't even be coming to our shores due to an outright lack of interest in the vehicle by our market. The new S2000 would sit nicely in Honda's lineup as the go to for consumers who want something in between the Civic Type R and the Acura NSX.

2. Size and weight

For those curious of the proportions, look to the Mazda MX-5 for an idea of what you may be looking at in showrooms in a couple of years time. Canyon carver indeed, with the numbers on the scale tipping somewhere in the neighborhood of 2,900 pounds. We would hope that Honda would keep things old school with the transmission and provide a 6-speed manual but something tells us that we shouldn't be surprised to see a paddle shifted automatic in the car.

3. The tech

The new S2000 could be powered by a boosted, high revving 4 cylinder, mounted behind the seats and using a technology similar to Mitsubishi's two-stage electric boosting system. A transverse mid mounted drive train would require less unique engineering, than front engine RWD.  The Mitsubishi system consists of a conventional turbo, electric supercharger, and a bypass valve, which is more fuel friendly, lightweight, and smaller than a twin-turbo setup, but also gives better torque response with zero lag.

4. Where it will be built

The next generation S2000 could be built at the Honda Performance Manufacturing Center in Marysville, Ohio alongside its big brother, the NSX. With the S2000 being related to the upmarket branded NSX, they are also sharing more than just roommate status, which will make it a bit expensive. With all of the tech being put into the open top racer, we are speculating that the price tag could be in the neighborhood of $50 grand. The engine, which we're sure will be rev happy, and quite at home in the upward regions of the powerband will also be built somewhere in our great states of the US of A.

5. Being thankful for what we have

Sadly, no legitimate information has been obtained from anyone with a Honda Corporate ID badge as of the writing of this article. However, if it is happening we could really see something as early as Fall of this year. We're hoping for either the Los Angeles Auto Show or the Paris Motor Show as the unveiling destinations for the brand. But for now, at least we have the beloved S2000 AP1 and 2 to enjoy while we patiently wait for Honda to bless us with another rear wheel drive masterpiece of motoring.
