iRacing

iRacing is the big boy of the sim market. Talk to anyone who runs an at-home simulator and this is going to come in the discussion without question. From NASCAR to open-wheel cars this one has it all. The online community is huge and the physics are accurate. It’s one of the only sims on the market that is awash with professional racing drivers who testify how authentic the experience is.The team has made over twenty driving simulations in the past so you can count on these guys to deliver.

Asetto Corsa

Produced by Kunos Simulazioni out of Italy this popular sim is used all over the world. In my experience with it, I have found the breakaway characteristics (i.e. drifting) of cars to be slightly awkward, but you can tune the physics and setups are incredibly detailed. Perhaps a different configuration would correct this. Asetto Corsa has a lot of variety and is visually stunning. The tracks are dead on accurate.

R3E

Raceroom Racing Experience is a free game that seeks to offer you a behind the wheel experience at little to no budget. One of the unique features of this platform is that you can pick and choose the circuits and tracks you want to run on for an individual price. The nice thing about this platform for the seasonal competitor is that you can tailor the program to tracks/cars you actually compete in.

Fanatec

This company produces steering wheel and pedal sets for the hardcore sim racing enthusiast. They feel incredible, they look incredible, and they contribute to the over all feel of bringing a simulator to life. Steering wheels replicate the exact racing cars they come from including the 918 RSR, BMW Touring Cars, as well as two different styles of Formula racing cars. Fanatec is a top provider in the market and one company that is not to be over looked.

What to buy?

If you’re in the market for a great sim that you can have fun on with the goal of great competition I would have to say iRacing with a moderately priced Fanatec wheel is the way to go. A number of professionals that use this platform make it hard to argue with and you’re sure to get some good fender to fender battles for the money. Don’t cheap out on a steering wheel and pedal set as they ramp up the experience and realism you will feel through your finger tips! Race on fellow gear heads!
