Fending off Temptation

Our entire lives, we're conditioned to want more. And when something new comes out, we want to replace whatever we have with the newest, shiniest toy. Temptations get the better of us time and time again unless your name is Jackie Law. Law, the owner of this S2000 for the last 12 years, has remained perfectly content with his ride. Although even he admits to Super Street that his eyes have wandered occasionally. "The NSX was always a car that I'd wanted," he says, "and also a [Type] 997 Porsche 911, but I was never able to give this car up for a new project."

Can't Give You Up

That doesn't mean, of course, that Law is content to leave his AP1 as is. Over the dozen years of ownership, he's tweaked the car to perfection, changing many things along the way. Aside from all the money and time he's invested into the car, Law can't bring himself to give it up, mainly for sentimental reasons. "I've thought about selling it to try something new, but I always get scared and end up keeping the car," he admits.

Winds of Change

The S2000 has undergone quite a few exterior changes over the years and is nearly a completely different car since it first appeared in Honda Tuning way back in 2010. Voltex supplied the front bumper and rear diffuser, while the hood is a custom Spoon Sports piece. Wheels are Volk Racing TE37s, which partially cover the enormous AP Racing brakes.

Leave It to the Pros

While most of the work done to the S2000 was completed by Law and his buddies, some things are better left to the pros. He found that out the hard way. "Most of the work was done by me and some friends," he said. But "after pulling the motor once in the garage, I knew I never wanted to do that again." So he enlisted nearby A&J Racing to take care of swapping in the current F22C, which produces a healthy 420 hp.

Go Big(ger)

For Law, the S2000 was love at first sight. "I've wanted the S2000 since it came out," he says. "I was a big fan of the 9,000-rpm redline, and I wanted something I could beat on at the track." But his quest for more power with the F20C1 led him down the road of self-destruction, to the point where he blew it up trying to extract the power he truly wanted. This, of course, gave him the opportunity to go bigger.

Got to Learn Somehow

As much stuff as he's screwed up and broken over the years, nothing will stop Law from at least trying the DIY. "Almost everything on the car I've broken once or replaced," he says. Heck, he even prepped the car for paint, which he admits was more difficult than he thought it would be. Luckily, he had some expert advice to lean on. "It was a learning process for me, as I've never done it before. My body guy, Kevin, was kind enough to teach me as I went, and he looked over all the work, making sure I was on track."

Getting It Just Right

Pretty impressive for a guy who admittedly learned most of what he knows through magazines and trail and error; but Law wouldn't trade the long and oftentimes frustrating experience for anything. And it sounds like after all this time, he finally has the car he's always wanted. "I knew it was gonna be a long-term project," he admitted. "I think I'm finally happy with the car. What it is today is pretty much what I wanted it to be."
