Uncontainable

At last year's Performance Racing Industry show there was a certain S2000 that was the most talked about build from the whole event. Jason Schmuck put this AP2 together to not only be the be all end all S2000 on the planet but to serve as a business card for his budding fabrication business. What's makes you think that Jason has the gall to state that his S2000 is the greatest example of what the car could be? Well, there's a J-series engine swap, a pair of Garrett turbos, and a Ford rear end.

Jason became the owner of this S2000 four years ago and afterward threw on a set of Enkeis on added some turbocharging to the engine.  "I [knew] they were great platforms to leave mostly stock and turbo," Jason says about the S2000. "My goal was to have a mostly stock S2000 to daily [drive] and have fun with." With that boost under the hood, the F-Series was good for putting out 600 horsepower on completely stock internals.

The old fashioned way

In the pursuit of more power, there will always be casualties and that came in the form of an oil pump that blew up and led to an 800 horsepower rebuild.  "I [knew] they were great platforms to leave mostly stock and turbo," Jason says about the S2000. "My goal was to have a mostly stock S2000 to daily [drive] and have fun with." That luck is what took Jason to think about switching up the powerplants and going with a 60-degree V6 engine and figuring out how to get one to fit. "There's not much information out there for the swap," which means that he had to have a trial by fire with his build.

Jason used his fabrication know how and ingenuity to get the J32 into the S2000 and hooked up to all of the things that make the car run.

Location is everything

One reason that J-series swap information is difficult to find it that the engine was designed for something with the transmission up front. "[This] puts the whole cooling system off the back, transmission side of the engine," Jason says. "I had to make a lot of custom, one-off things for the cooling system in order to get everything [to] fit and [remain] hidden." Items such as the thermostat and water pump had to be hidden and the pair of radiators were relocated out back. Yes, you read that right. Two radiators. "This car has two of everything," Jason says about symmetry and the numerical motif's place within the build. "The goal was to keep everything 100-percent symmetrical."

Work/Fun balance

The theme of two carries on with of course the two sizable Garrett GTX3576 turbos that shove air through a throttle body that came from a Dodge Charger and a one-off intake manifold. Grunt is transmitted through the OEM gearbox but then passes through an XPerformance 8.8-inch Ford rear end and axles made to fit before making its way to Regamasters.

"When I bought the car, it was driven daily, [and] up until now the car has been apart more than it's been together," Jason says. "It's hard to find time to work on personal cars while keeping up with the business."

Burning up tracks in the near future

While Jason's AP2 hasn't seen any track time yet, he does have plans to make a transition for the car to out and out race car soon. In the meantime, the car still serves as a showcase for Schmuck Built and everything that Jason is capable of.
