Daily Slideshow: What do Forum Members Hate?

S2ki forum members know what they like, know what they don't, and aren't shy about it.

Stanced

"Garbage."  "No."  As you probably know if you've been a forum member for any amount of time, those are common reactions to unwanted content on S2ki. Those responses certainly get the thumbs-down message across. We thought it would be interesting to make a list, with your help, of course, outlining common culprits. While some forum members may view any post not originating from a member as trolling or spam, just as many members realize your friendly local Curated Content Editors' hands are tied, that we have to post sometimes to keep the lights on. As we were saying. We hear you. One thing we hear is that slammed-and-stanced rides are ridiculous. Of course, not all members feel this way, and many come here for advice about how to get those tires more horizontal. Why so much unlove for the stanced? Probably because at its core, the S2000 is a sports car, and for most, that sport involves handling that deteriorates proportionately with stance.

Stale Stuff

As a group, active S2000 owners tend to hoover up any interesting info about their favorite car, so by the time a story about a build shows up in S2ki, there's a chance it will be old news to many members. In a way, it's like the olden days of car mags where one project car would appear in several magazines in quick succession. But what's familiar to some might be fresh for newer members or newer S2000 owners. And Curated Content Editors always be curating, it's in the job title. Another way of looking at it is that forum members are the content providers in this joint. When a story can be made from members' outstanding photography and unique descriptions, then we all win and the magazines will come here for content.

Intruder Swaps

Like most issues we are raising today, engine swaps don't rub everyone the wrong way, but they rub some harder than others. In a semi-recent piece on Honda K-motor swaps members were split. The S2000's F-series engines are so well-engineered, it's difficult to improve on what the factory made, especially without getting into the mountains-of-cash territory. As a result, the boost of the turbo and blower varieties are favorite power-adders. Because of the sheer number of cheap performance solutions available for certain other Japanese manufacturers' engines, occasionally, we'll see those pop up. But usually, there's a story about how the original F engine gave up the ghost that helps placate the brand-loyal. Of course, LS swaps do happen. What we'd really like to see is a head-to-head, dollar-for-dollar comparison between a 600-horse LS-swapped S2000 and an equally powerful turbocharged S2k. Any volunteers?

High Dolla

Speaking of unobtanium parts-dependent projects, one thing forum members are vocal about is sinking more into an S2000 than its sticker price asked. Naturally, racers go through buckets of cash just to keep things together and eek out a few tenths, but street builds that use credit cards rather than brain power to get things done show a lack of ingenuity. Favorite comments include: "It drives me crazy to see a car with that much money into it being washed..... at a coin wash.... Be smart, buy a house before dumping $20-$30k into a car!"

Bought not Built

Closely related to dumping mad cash into an S2000 build is throwing money at a shop to buy their vanity project, in effect funding someone else's dream. Charity begins at home. The problem with the bought builds is some of the money goes into paying their social media managers and P.R. agents, which is why the crazy builds show up in the bigger online portals. As one member put it: "Most of those try to glorify bastardized S2Ks." Truth be told, the shops that build their anime-painted, overfendered, over-winged,  and Spooned-out creations likely learned more than a bit about their practice via S2ki.

Hype

Kowtowing, preaching to the converted, not taking yes for an answer—all boring stuff. Forum members clearly love their S2000s, so it's no wonder they could do without reading variations on "Of course, the S2000 is the best car ever imagined by man since he rose into the turgid miasma of existence, here are 99 reasons why it's even better than sliced gold!" In the strategically censored words of one member: "No need to wh@re out and hype the S2k - it doesn't need it! True lovers of it will find their way to it without all the wh@ring and wack hype." This is a forum, your forum, so now it's your turn. Let fly. Just no wack hype, please.
