Autocross

Start here: It’s cheap. If you spin you will hit cones. You will not damage your car and you will drive home the same way you came in if you’re not an idiot. Even if you are…you’re just going to hit cones. Oh yeah, they make you work. It kind of sucks, but seat time is seat time.

Racing School

It’s time to stretch your legs. My advice? Ditch track days that suck your money and limit your progress. Save up and attend a racing school. I’ve worked as a pro driving coach for Porsche and a track day instructor. You will learn more in 1 hour with the right coach than you will attending 10 track days where you get held up by slower cars and frustrated. Stick to autocross and racing schools in the early stages…

Track Days

After attending classes you should continue to autocross while adding in track days. If you left your ego at the door at racing school, you will move through run groups now that you have more experience. This gets you into a group where people don’t hold you up as much and you can begin to respectfully pass and be passed without having to wait for a point-by. Maximize your time and money!

Learn Car Setup

Getting good doesn’t happen for years. Becoming great takes decades. If you want to get better as a driver you will need to start understanding setup on some level. Even Michael Schumacher couldn’t win races if he used crappy parts or cut corners in understanding how to get a car to turn in better. All great drivers understand car setup to some degree. Buy every book you can afford on amazon about chassis setup and suspension. You won’t regret it!

Goals that Drive You

After a few years of doing all of this as much as you can, your personal goals will determine how you improve. Do you want to get faster on turn in or understand how to control a slide better? Start to identify where your driving suffers by having faster guys you can trust co-drive your car. Comparing will help exploit weakness so you can refine yourself every time you go out on track.

Cross Train

Pursuing goals will naturally guide you to becoming a better driver as you adapt. The best drivers can do it all. Sebastian Loeb epitomizes what it means to be a great driver by participating in multiple disciplines. The fastest guys respect all forms of motorsport. Any type of motorsport has something that you will carry into the next thing you do. Even driving off road will make you better in an S2000. Go drifting. Go autocross. Go time attack and go endurance racing. That’s it. Get out there and do it!
