Well, actually my uncle got nailed by one. My uncle and I were driving from his home in Redding, CA down I-5 to a car show in Sacramento where he planned on entering his 1970 LS6 Chevelle convertible in a car show.
California has thousands of miles of scenic highway, the stretch of I-5 between Redding and Sacramento is not one of them. It's long, straight and boring so we were hauling ass. In the small town of Corning, just south of Red Bluff, I spotted a police car on an on-ramp. I hollered to my uncle to slow down but a Dodge Ram 3500 pulling a trailer and Chevelle doesn't exactly scrub speed off very fast. We were screwed. My uncle and I were a little puzzled because we saw the red light flashing but at the same time we saw the unmistakable glare of HID headlights. Well, turns out it was an S2000!
I asked the officer about the car. He said they just started using them this week. The cars in service are pretty much stock. The service version differs from the street version with an upgraded alternator, a reinforced front sub frame and bumper for executing the P.I.T. (Precision Immobilization Technique) maneuver radio equipment, shotgun, lights and of course the paint scheme and blacked out wheels. The officer said he isn't a big fan of sports cars, but it beats the hell out of a Crown Victoria.
He let us off with a warning and told us to slow it down. Fortunately I had a camera on me for snapping pictures at the car show in Sacramento and got a few of the CHP car.
I walked up a hillside to get this shot.
If you look closely in this picture you can see the silver box on the dash that controls the lights and radio and also the shotgun.
I did some research and found these "studio" pictures on CHP's website.
The service version uses a single red light instead of a full lightbar much like the CHP Camaros seen here. CHP
