Registration
Registration is now open for the event. Read below first, then click here: Register!

IMPORTANT: On the second page of the registration process, you must enter "S2KI Allegheny S2000 Owners Club" in the Car Club Affiliation field. That's the only way for the PVGP people to know how much space to reserve for us. You'll get an email confirmation, but nothing will be sent to you in the mail and you don't need to bring any paperwork to the event. They'll have your information at the gate when you arrive.

The organizers have asked that we all register by July 10th (I know the site says July 18th, but we're special) so they have time to map out the different club areas. I'll post a reminder a couple of days before then. Just to be clear, there are no refunds and the event is rain or shine. Also, if you absolutely can't preregister, you can pay at the gate on Saturday. However, there's a possibility that there won't be enough room for you to park in our designated S2KI area, so I recommend preregistering.

Caravan and Arrival
The main event for us will take place on Saturday, July 19th. The gates open at 9:30am. Walt (cilocar) and I will be there waiting to direct you to our area and line up the cars. You guys seem to be fans of caravanning places, so I'd like to use that as a tool to streamline the arrival process. If everyone could get there at the same time, or at least in a couple of groups, it would be much easier to get everyone parked. As we get closer to the event, I'll figure out a good meeting location and time (suggestions are welcome). You definitely don't have to caravan in. If you're preregistered and you've posted here that you're coming, we'll save a spot for you. I would still suggest getting there as early as possible though, just in case the Mazda people get unruly and start moving into our turf.

I know some of you are already planning on going both days (myself included), but on Sunday you can come whenever you want. Sundays are much less crowded, so even though we won't have a special blocked off section, you'll be able to park together anyway.

Lunch, etc.
You can bring a picnic lunch if you'd like or you can buy food there. The food for sale is county fair style - think Italian sausage sandwiches and funnel cakes sold from a trailer. This is a BYOB event, if you're into that kind of thing. I recommend bringing lawn chairs, sunscreen, and plenty of water. It gets hot out there! And of course, wear comfy shoes.

Here's some additional info about the PVGP rules and such: General Event Information

That's it for now. Please let me know if I'm leaving anything out or if you have any questions. This is going to be so much fun!

Sara, my good-at-planning-things wife, has offered to get in touch with the PVGP organizers to find out if it's possible to have our own S2KI display area within the Asian Car Show. While she's working on that, I just thought I would put out a feeler to see if there is enough interest to make an S2KI event out of it. The Miata club always has a huge showing - let's give them a reason to clam up for 5 minutes.

In case you're not familiar, the Pittsburgh Vintage Grand Prix is a really unique vintage race that takes place every July in Schenley Park. It's the nation's largest vintage race event and the only vintage race event that is run on actual city streets. The best place to watch the races is from the Bob O'Connor Golf Course where the PVGP stages an International Car Show. The cars are organized by country of origin and are spread out over the entire golf course. Over 2,000 cars participate in the car show - it's really amazing to see so many interesting vehicles in one place! And most importantly, this event raises money for the Autism Society of Pittsburgh and the Allegheny Valley School. Last year they were able to donate $350,000 to those two very worthy causes.

Participating in the car show costs $30 per car and entitles you to a parking spot on the golf course Saturday AND Sunday. Parking on the golf course is key, and here's why: it's perfectly acceptable/encouraged to pack lawn chairs, a picnic lunch, and a few cold ones and just hang out all day while you check out the races and the car show! Sara and I have been attending the PVGP for many years now, but entered cars in the show for the first time last year. To give you an idea of what to expect, here's what went down. Sara entered the WRX in the special Subaru section of the Asian Car Show, which had a police escorted parade into the golf course early Saturday morning. Her car was loaded with lawn chairs and a cooler full of beer, water, and sandwiches. She and over 100 other Subaru owners cruised into Schenley Park at about 9:15am, before the gates opened to the rest of the participants at 9:30am. My plan was to meet her there in the S2K. Since I wasn't lucky enough to be a part of a police escorted parade which was allowed to bypass the car show traffic, I had to slowly make my way to the Asian car section. However, the organizers of this event really know what they're doing and they have the process down to a science. I was parked by 10:00am. After getting settled and cleaning the cars, we walked around the closest parts of the car show. Soon enough, it was lunch time so we headed to the WRX and set up camp to eat. After that, we checked out more of the car show, met up with some friends, and saw some of the race qualifying. Saturday's festivities wrapped up at about 5:00pm. Sunday, we only took the S2K, but still packed chairs and whatnot. We got there at about 10:30am, walked around the show a bit and ate lunch. Then we grabbed our lawn chairs, packed some beverages in a portable cooler and headed out to find a spot to watch the races. As you can see, paying the $30 to participate in the car show gives you a really convenient home base to use while you enjoy the race weekend events. When you consider that all of the money goes to charity, $30 is a pretty insignificant price to pay for a weekend full of fun. (BTW, if you had to just pick one day to go, it should be Saturday - the car show is bigger that day for some reason. The price is still $30 even if you only go one day, but who cares, it's for charity.)

So let me know what you guys think and I'll let you know what Sara comes up with. I think if we could get at least 10-15 cars to participate, we could have a nice little area. Sara mentioned getting an S2KI flag or sign or something made to show our club pride. This is a really awesome event for an awesome cause - let's do it!

EDIT by Hannibal - Added Caravan Details

Alright, Caravan details!

When: Saturday, July 19th at 9AM
Where: Carnegie Mellon University East Campus Garage
What: PVGP Caravan Meeting Point. Be there or be square.

We'll meet at 9am on Saturday, July 19th on the roof level of the Carnegie Mellon University East Campus Garage. We'll plan to leave the garage for Schenley Park at 9:30am. The entrance to PVGP is right up the street from the garage.

To get to the garage, you'll want to navigate to the Carnegie Mellon University UC Turnaround, and the garage entrance will be right there. The address for the university is 5000 Forbes Ave, Pittsburgh, PA 15213 though that may not get you exactly to the parking garage. The garage is free on weekends and the gate should be up. If not, grab a ticket and you'll use it to get out and you won't need to pay anything. Once you're in, go straight and head up to the roof. The garage is big enough that there will be plenty of space for us even if other groups decide to meet there.

Here's a google map showing the UC Turnaround the parking garage: Directions

I'll also PM everyone on the list with my cell number.

See you all on Saturday!

-Mike

You know we will be there! I believe that they charge you $15 a day to park on Flagstaff hill and take the shuttle bus to the racecourse, so $30 for the weekend to be in the show and next to the course is a bargain and is for a very worthy cause.

Let me know how I can help, after all I'm retired and have time so if you would need someone to meet personally with someone or do anything else, just let me know. My computer skills are very limited but I'm sure there are other things that I can help with.

I am so bummed about this! I just realized I am leaving town the morning of the 19th .

This is seriously one of my favorite events of the year. My brother and I always go Saturday and it is such a blast. I am upset I wont be around for it this year (especially if we get a group together for the car show).

I highly encourage everyone to make it out for this.

Count us in.
I've been to many PVGP's. I had the S on the lawn 2 years ago & it was fun.

Uh oh... look who has her own screen name! This forum is about to go downhill fast...

Anyway, I have good news! S2KI is officially a part of the PVGP International Car Show! As Mike mentioned, I've been talking to the PVGP people and they're excited to add another car club to the show. We're in!

Obviously, we're a couple of months away at this point, so the details are still being ironed out. I'll have a link and instructions for registering in the next few weeks. In the mean time, please keep posting here if you plan on coming. I'd like to keep the attendee list up to date so that I know where we stand.

Let me know if you have any questions. I really hope to have a big turnout for this event. Let's shoot for maximum S2000 presence! #s2000takeover
