Default July 19 - Solidarity Drive For Levi VI

Solidarity Drive For Levi VI - Saturday, July 19

Time to bag your best friend's wedding, forget your parent's 50th anniversary, order up a sitter to cover the baby's #2 birthday and otherwise clear your calendar for the Sixth North Country Solidarity Drive for Levi.

Touring the best S2000 back roads that the eastern Adirondacks have to offer - where the highway surveyors couldn't follow a straight line, where the thinking population has left for California and where the state legislature has declared a mostly safe 55 mph speed limit.

PLEASE TELL YOU SIGNIFICANT OTHER NOW!

Here’s what others have said (2012):

“The best drive of my life, amazing roads!” TheCarFather
“The tail of the dragon of the northeast.” BM612
“Just wild.” Foulone
“GREAT drive! Wonderful roads!” Tadashi
“Fantastic. Now I know what the S stands for.” Riggit Tony
“Epic” Lurchenstein
“Seriously wickedly outstanding!” Fasting
“My top s2ki meet thus far!” Mark356

As yet, I haven't had much opportunity to "plan the route", but planning has never been my strong point. It will probably be the usual seat of the pants affair.

Start will be at Exit 28 off Northway (I-87) (Route 74, Ticonderoga, Paradox Lake) This exit is at Northway Milepost 88.1 Exit 28 is 1 3/4 hours north of the Hudson River crossing in Albany and about 50 minutes north of Lake George Village exit. From Clifton Park rest area, probably about 1.5 hours. About 35 minutes north of the Warrensburg Exit and say 30 minutes north of the Chestertown exit (which I think is Route 8 for those coming from the west.

Exit 28 is about 1 hr, 20 min. south of Plattsburgh if you happen to come from that direction.

We will start no later than 10:15 a.m. Drive should be ending by 3:30 or 4:00 for those who want to get back south.

I plan to incorporate all three A+ roads that we have liked so much in the past.

Unwritten Rules:

1. Be alert!

2. Stay in your established travel lanes! The basic NY speed limit is 55 mph. Several of these roads are nothing but (blind) curves but I do not expect to be puttering along at 15 mph. We are likely to encounter motorcycles coming at us from the opposite direction. If we get behind something slow on these roads, we will pull over and wait for it to get a sufficient distance ahead.

3. Drive within your comfort zone and safely. This is not a race. If you lose the drive leader(s) just follow the route and we will wait for you at the next convenient intersection. You cannot get lost!

4. Slow down in the villages! We will pass through up to eight (8) villages. There may be police in any of these plus on Route 73 (which we may take) We will not be going more than 30 mph through the villages.

5. Don't buzz the locals!

In my humble opinion, I think the thread should be left down here where more of the Upstate riff-raff are likely to see it. Don't forget, we are trying to attract a certain type of driver - Too blue-blooded intellectual up there above the line.

I've already identified 3 bridges and 2 culvert that are washed out and / or under repair - and that's before the thunderstorms of mid July have done their worst. So we should have plenty of options taking back roads off of the back roads.

This is a fun drive. No food, but a fun drive. If you have never attended, now is your chance.

Jeff - the thread will be left down here. Levi only wanted me to add a link to this thread to the 2014 Events thread which is pinned.

I'm not inclined to pin drive threads in general unless people ask for it to be pinned.
