IIRC Honda will produce parts for a car until 8 years after production. Technically that means Honda should produce F22C shortblocks until 2017. However, I'm not sure if that is the case given that I recall reading that the 2009 cars were a surplus from 2008.

Does anyone know when we will be able to buy shortblocks until?

I don't think they've produced anything since the car went out of production. They stocked parts for what they thought would last 8 years.

I am on pretty good terms with a local Honda parts guy. About six months ago he looked into short blocks as well as head assemblies. He says it appears that Honda is no longer producing the short blocks and the supply of them in the storage/shipping facilities is now limited to those already there. When the blocks and heads are gone, they are gone for good from Honda. Who knows how many are there and what the demand is. Crossed my mind to get a head or something and save it away for a rainy day. Even if I don't use I know there will alway be someone who will need a new OEM unit and you can get your money back. Guess I will take my chances.

 

I see. I was thinking it would be good to have some insurance for myself and that it might even be a possible investment.

 

I am pretty tight with Honda as well.

They are on backorder, with only 4 scheduled to be released. I am on the list to get one.

Maybe I need to rethink the whole miata bit. those motors are like 1/6 the cost.

This has me thinking of all those air-cooled Porsche motors that are around $20k-$30k in value and e30 m3 S14 motors going for around $10k-$12k.
