Default Rear Wheel arch Liners

Having looked at a few S2k i noticed the early ones seem to be prone to rust around the wheel arch liners. Given these are similar in design to the door edge strips you can buy that also cause rust what is the consensus of opinion re theses things.

It had been suggested to me by a bodyshop that I remove the liners clean up the arches, paint anyd scratches and chips and then carefully reapply the liners and seal them on with a small amount of clear silicone all the way around. They said that the biggest problem with the liners is fine gravel/ road salt getting behind these and scratching through the paint with vibration... Obviously this then leads to rust through time.

I quite like the idea of cleaning them up and either getting new liners or re using old ones and sealing the edges with silicone to prevent dirt ingress?

Anyone done this or got any alternative solutions?

Ive had over 20 Honda's now and 3 S2000s. I rip them straight off every one I ever have and have never had a problem with huge chips etc. I think they are more detrimental to the paint and metal of the car leaving them on.

Remove them and bin them Your saving weight too

They do protect the arches, but they also cause rust if left unattended.

They should be taken off once a year, the metal cleaned and coated with waxoyl then re-fitted.

They are around £10 each from Honda so if yours have not been cleaned for years I'd buy new ones

I thought this post might have referred to an aftermarket install of wheel arch liners rather than wheel aperture edge protectors ( removed mine as soon as rust warning bells sounded ).

There is no protection for the underside of the car aft of the rear wheels. Crud is allowed to be thrown around & although the bumper is plastic there are numerous places for rust to start as a consequence of not being shielded from wheel spray.

I'm aware wheel arch liners are available for some classic cars but am curious if there is a suitable material that could be moulded into shape then clipped in place.

Interesting... Ive never liked the door edge protectors on cars for the same reason as the arch edge liners on the S. Gonna take them off at the weekend and clean up the arches. May waxoyl then reapply new liners and seal with clear silicone to prevent any future probs. Worst case scenario the silcone will come away easy enough should they need to come off again. I'll let you know how it goes!

Junked 'em straight away too, they cause more trouble than they're worth!

Mine landed on the garage floor soon after we got this one, I did mean to check inside the wheel arch for underseal(or similar) and ensure that the paint is well polished, and check for stone chips every wash. I'll get to it soon.
