Default HPDE roll bar requirement

Coming from a Subaru, I never needed a roll bar or a cage to run in HPDE, but with the s2k I know that a roll bar is a requirement for pretty much any organization out there.

I will eventually get a Hard Dog roll bar in the car, but I was trying to avoid going that route for this season.

Now my question is whether running an OEM hardtop will allow me to get on the track or whether I would need to the roll bar regardless of whether I'm running a hard top or not.

I'm primarily looking at NASA and SCCA PDX. Been looking through the regulations and emailing the technical coordinators but I haven't found a definitive answer yet.

Thanks in advance.

NASA HPDE does not require a roll bar for the s2000

It is one of the cars on the approved list because of OEM approved/stated roll over protection for the car.

conversely the corvette convertible is not approved because GM does not state that the car has Factory rollover protection.

If you email the NASA region you are in they should help. The NASA region where I am (Florida) allows S2000's to run as they rolled off the assembly line, OEM roll protection and no hard top.

The SCCA region i used to live in (South Jersey) allowed you to run an OEM hard top without a roll bar, but it HAD to be OEM.

Bear in mind sometimes States (as in the Gov't) have more restrictive laws. For example: New Jersey requires convertables to have either an OEM hard top OR and SCCA approved roll bar to run on a road course, so a NASA event there would have to comply with those rules due to state law.

YMMV

Thanks for the responses guys...I emailed the regional coordinators and still haven't hear back yet.

I know if I run NASA on VIR I will need a roll bar so shrug...I will keep emailing and researching.

Any additional feedback would be appreciated.

NASA does not require an aftermarket roll bar for the S, but some tracks such as VIR do require it. Ultimately it will depend on the sanctioning body and specific track rules. Most tracks will allow stock roll protection for the S. I've run Road Atlanta and Barber with the factory roll bars and no hard top.

No hardtop required for NASA in CA.

Note that the hard top does not add any rollover protection.

Not sure where you live but some of the HDPE groups at Pocono allow stock S2000s.

Track rules usually supercede organizational rules. With NASA SE, you aren't required to run a roll bar, but when they run at VIR you do. Just like at Barber you need arm restraints (or used to, not sure what their rules are now).

You can run a completely stock s2000 in NASA TT unless the specific track rules dictate you have to have after market roll protection. VIR is the only track I know of out east that still requires after market roll protection for the S.
