Default What is causing this "knock" sound at idle?

I have a MY00 s2000 with 90 000 km's. I am the original owner. The car runs great but the engine has an intermitent knocking sound at idle. It pretty much goes away as I increase the revs. Before I wreck my head on this one I thought i would ask the community. The idle seems very stable to me and at first i thought it could be the idle droping to low but that doesn't seem to be the case.

Just a little history, the car has the upgraded banjo bolts, upgraded map sensor and I recently did a valve adjustment (no cracked retainers) and I did the TCT fix as well just to rule that out.

The knock is heard primarily in the first 5 seconds of the video. Any input or direction would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Yeah it's the pistons. I notice for whatever reason when I do my oil change it subsides, however after a thousand or two thousand miles it starts coming back.

if you think knocking noises coming from the engine are normal then you are mistaken, could be a timing chain tensioner or rod bearing

Both of those would be very apparent.. Even for the beginning stages of these two problems they would not sound like the video he posted at all.. Just my 02.

The OP would have to rev his car up to really distinguish the difference between this one and his. I don't hear the same thing at idle but under a few rpms could be different.

The OP's motor sounds the same as many I've heard before. I'm doing a valve adjustment next week so I'll have to see if that helps clear up the sound I hear when I pull into my car port. I'm almost sure its the pistons/valve tap for both of us.

so youre saying that the piston is contacting the valve?

so how does a piston tap? what does it tap on?

I personally have never heard of honda heaving piston slap? GM yeah sure, but not honda

I've never heard of piston "slap" but I have heard of the pistons making this noise. I had some high compression CP pistons in my old civic and it made a tapping like noise no matter how fresh the oil was and whether or not a valve adjustment was done. It's either this or a slight valve tap.

Either way if it doesn't get louder after being revved up, or after its warmed up its probably not going to be an issue for you at all. I'm sure if it was someone more knowledgable would have spoken up by now.
