My folks bought a new Datsun Bluebird in 1975 (a 180B SSS I seem to recall) and on the day we collected the car, the dealer seeing that I was very interested took me out for a brief blast in his 260Z 2+2.
I was smitten and consequently came very close to owning a Z; first a 240Z back in 1981 (it had seriously rotten front chassis members but the seller reneged on the deal and sold to another buyer for a higher price. Not that I'm bitter, even now...).
IIRC the 240Z had a hand throttle. I still have the original 240Z Owner's Handbook from the one I almost bought in '81.
Later in 1986 I was offered a good friend's 260Z.
I still kick myself about not buying my friend's 260Z; it could've been mine for £1500 at the time but as a fairly recent graduate, it was out of my budget to buy this and have a Fiat Panda too! The 260Z was very low mileage, in fantastic condition and it had been well sorted with new front wings, door skins and an excellent colour change from period metallic brown to a rather nice Audi dark blue metallic.
Coincidentally a few years later I was chatting with my then boss about cars one day and he said he'd owned a 260Z which gave him a big fright; he had been pressing on home along the A68 from Scotland into Northumberland and he took off a rise. A component in the diff' failed whilst in mid-ar and locked-up the rear wheels when he landed. The car subsequently landed in a ditch and was unrepairable.
I have looked longingly at Z's on more than one occasion but can't help feeling that, like most classics, they're best committed to memory.
