If Mercedes plans to stop producing petroleum cars in just 7 years, they'll be selling just about nothing in 7 years as well. I'd say the chances of this happening are somewhere around negative 5000%. The world is entirely dependent on oil and that will not be solved within 7 years. Not even close.

Plus, this "news" has not been reported in major reputable publications, automotive or otherwise, something that ecogeek.com certainly cannot claim to.

You'd be amazed at how fast a product can make it to market when a "need" dictates. I'm not saying it will happen, but if world circumstances necessitate such an immediate change, it will happen.

while i'd usually agree with this statement, i cant see how that can apply to cars in just 7 yrs... its not the product/consumer that is the problem, it lies in the oil companies and their refusal to put up anything other than gas stations. can we really expect the country to be filled with hydrogen or electric charging stations instead of gas? even if we started today, it'd be a tough sell... to have the entire line of benz be running on non-gasoline is just too far a stretch in 7 yrs imo

an example would be brazil, which is completely independent from import oil. but they've started w/ legislation since the 70's and it has taken over 30 yrs to have all cars be flex..etc
