It was probably a Tiptronic S4. I love the S2000 and I opened up an S2000 v. S4 discussion a while back and it was pretty much accepted that the 6-speed S4 cannot be beat by the S2000. Of course there are other factors involved, but generally speaking, stock for stock, the S4 is a force to be reckoned with. There's just too much torque in that car even with the weight.

--Stock S4: 250 hp - 258lbs/ft torque at a low 1850rpm to 3,600rpm (conservative estimates from Audi)--

Both cars are tough to launch and the S2000 should have the lead in the beginning, but soon afterwards, the S4 will pull slowly but surely all the way to whatever limits and since most S4 owners who have a lead foot also chip the car, then it's no question what's going to happen.

I'd even go on to say that a Stage II S4 (top speed 170mph) will keep up or beat an SCed S2000 in a straight-line race.

Stock/stock, the S4 and the S2000 are pretty comparable in pure speed. But I'd pick the S4 to win consistently.

Good race, nevertheless.

Apples and oranges.

It's a driver's race and the S2K is certainly capable of beating a S4, particularly if you go from a roll where the S4 doesn't get the AWD jump off the line, say above 30 mph in 1st gear. Above 100 mph the S2K's crappy convertible aerodynamics begin to get in the way.

Remember, torque is irrelevant if you don't consider all other factors. That's why hp is such a good comparison tool. It's obvious that the S4 is underrated in hp. 3600 lbs with driver at only 250 hp to get that performance? I think not, more like 285-290 hp. But even with that much power stock, we're still talking about a similar power/weight ratio to the S2K.

Of course, the problem then is finding a stock S4. But you never know, with all the shit Audi is giving owners about chipped cars, it might easier now then it was 6 months ago.

But to answer Moneeb's question succinctly, the only way a _stock_ S4 driver is going to destroy a S2K is if the S4 driver can drive and the S2K driver can't (I've seen S4's running 15's at the track too). With competent drivers, it's a toss-up.

At speed, I don't think it will be a toss-up. I believe a stock S4 will pull on the S2000. Not pull like a freight train, but pull enough to know who's faster. I'm probably talking out of my ass, but hopefully this forum will provide some real world street encounters.

I'll have to race an S2000 while my S4 is stock.

Hey Ben,

I posted a while ago about an encounter I had with an S4 on northbound I5 last Christmas.

We ran about three times from 50 to [something faster] MPH. I stayed even or pulled ahead each time, and he was the one who initiated, so I had the disadvantage of reaction time. I did have it in VTEC each time, though.

He didn't look too amused .

I know you got mad rowing skills, Ted.

Unless by some kind of miracle I end up with the S2000, we'll have to do some runs once my S4 comes off the boat.

That S4 you raced against was probably a Tiptronic, but we shall see.

Thanks, but I think it was just the car making me look good.

I thought you had the Black/Red all lined up in Oregon...

Yeah, coulda been an auto, or it coulda been a chipped stick with a really crappy driver, who knows.

Ted,

Combo of high price of S2000 w/ hardtop and tuneability of the S4 made me switch sides. I think my European trip also influenced my decision to go Audi as well.

It was a tough call, though! Maybe it's been too long since I've experienced 9K? hehe

Don't let yourself be seduced by the dark side, Luke!

It's hard to beat a turbo engine for cheap power, though; hard to argue there.

Just let me know if you need another dose of S2000 sweetness...

Ted
