i know that theres a lot of thread of hona s engine. but i narrowed it down to what i want is either amsoil or rp. ive been reading for reviews about those brands. people say mobil 1 but they said that mobil 1 make ur tct tick. so i was wondering what BC members use for oil.

also guys do you guys have any idea what brand of engine oil they use on honda dealers cos thats where i take my car to get oil change?

Royal Purple..., always have. It is expensive and if I am getting an oil change at a dealer, I purchase it myself at Lordco and I take it there and tell them to use it. I also use K&N oil filters.

Yes, ring too..., not sure of the part number..., I just go in and ask for one. Also Royal Purple may be overkill, or so I'm told. From what I understand it is the best but that comes with a price. If you get your oil changed regularly at the appropriate intervals, I'm not so sure that you need something that good. There are other oils that people use so you may want to wait to hear a few more responses before purchasing the RP. The oil usually costs me more than the labor to change it.

I have used Amsoil a couple times, after 8000KM when I changed the oil it still looked golden and hadn't used a drop. I was really surprised at how clean it was at 8K, it looked awesome when I drained it. I am using Pennzoil this oil change since amsoil gets expensive to buy. I always use Honda filters, but that's because I used to work at Honda and they were cheap to buy. I probably will still use them though.

My car was on Royal Purple when I bought it, last owner said he always used it and I didn't see an issue with it when I had the car with it.

Amsoil you either have to buy online or from some dealers that sell it out of their house. I found two on the Island when I looked but didn't feel like arranging to get it. I also heard they use it at one of the quick oil change places but I can't remember which. nwp j's2k (also from Nanaimo) mentioned it but since he has an AP1 that drinks oil he was trying to track some down in Vancouver to top up.

I went with Motul 8100 which you can buy from AutoFX http://www.autofxgarage.com/. The issue with many of the big stores is a lot of what they sell isn't full synthetic. Royal Purple is which is widely available or Castrol 0W30 German blend which is also fairly common but harder to spot on the shelves.

Oh I found this.

Saw your post and I thought you might be interested in this. There are many posts here to do with oil preferences and change intervals, but I was never sure what to believe since I have no idea what the qualifications of the posters are. You never know if reccomendations are based on facts, or just an opinion because so and so uses it, so it must be good..... Since I have been using Royal Purple (I get it at Lordco) for the last 6 years, I thought I would contact RP to ask a few questions. The reply is below..........

The RP guy says he can be emailed, but because of the correspondance he has to handle every day from people like us, he doesn't always guarantee an answer right away.

Anyway, maybe this will answer some questions. Bear in mind that the opinions are from the seller, but since I'm a trusting soul, I have to believe that a reputable company like RP would not recommend anything that would hurt an engine, or their reputation.

I have not been using HPS because I have not seen it locally, but I will look for it for my next change. (I do the work myself) I follow Honda's reccomendations for dino oil. Can't go wrong there.

Dave

Subject: 2005 Honda S2000 recommendations, and drain intervals (in kilometers)
Good morning Dave,

For your 2005 Honda 2.2L 4 cylinder S2000 we recommend the following:

Engine Oil: Royal Purple SAE 10W-30 (part #01130, quart bottle) or for a significant upgrade in performance and protection Royal Purple HPS 10W-30 (part #31130, quart bottle); 5.1 quarts

Engine Oil filter: Royal Purple Extended Life Synthetic Oil filter (part #10-2808).(available at most Pep Boys and from many online sellers);

Manual Trans: Royal Purple HPS 5W-30(part #31530, quart bottle) or Royal Purple XPR 5W-30(part #01021, quart bottle); 1.6 quarts;

Differential: Royal Purple Max Gear 75W-90 (part #01300, quart bottle); 0.8 quarts;

Power steering: Royal Purple Max EZ (part #01326, 12- oz bottle);

Gasoline engine drain intervals:
For engine oil in street driven passenger car/light truck gasoline engines that are mechanically sound, and stock or mildly modified, the interval is up to 19,300 Kilometers(12,000 miles) or one year, whichever comes first.

Depending on how many times time you have previously put a high-quality synthetic motor oil in your engine, we recommend you stay with the manufacturer's recommended interval for two oil and filter changes. This is generally 4,800 to 9,600 Kilometers.

If you have done this with another high quality synthetic, or if you have another car that has very low usage (new or almost new car), the oil change interval can immediately be extended to 2x to 3x the recommended factory interval up to a very safe extended interval of up to 19,300 Kilometers or 1 year.

We recommend changing the engine oil filter during the extended oil interval using a high-quality filter. If the filter manufacturer gives change interval guidance, feel free to use that. Otherwise, if running the oil to 19,300 Kilometers, change the filter and top off the oil level at 6,400 Kilometers and 12,800 Kilometers. If you run the oil for up to 16,000 Kilometers, a single filter change at 8,000 Kilometers will be sufficient.

If you are using a Royal Purple extended life synthetic oil filter it will go the full distance of 19,300 kilometers. (available at most Pep Boys and also from many online sellers).

If you put less than 9,600 Kilometers a year on your vehicle, we recommend changing engine oil and filter once per year.

Whenever you change the oil filter, but not the oil, be sure to top off the oil level to make up for oil lost with the filter change. If running the RP oil filter, check your fluid level occasionally because all engine use some oil.

The 'short' initial oil change interval is to ensure that your engine is relatively clean before going to the extended interval. Many conventional oils and lower quality 'synthetics' tend to form deposits inside engines, and in diesels, leave soot build-up. The natural detergent action of Royal Purple's superior quality base oils tend to clean these deposits and dirty up the oil quickly. After the first two oil changes with Royal Purple, the bulk of the gunk should be gone.

Due to HPS being a relatively new product your local stores will likely not have HPS on the shelves. However a special order can be done at your local NAPA and O’Reilly’s.

HPS oils are definitely available on line and shipping at the following performance outlets:

Thanks Dave, I meant to post this for you but I am so busy I forgot all about it..., :-( Thanks for sharing though, very interesting since I have used RP since I purchased the car and I have been doing regular oil changes. I think you have to though to keep your warrantee, even though, mine is a US car.
